It seems to be bad at determining where sentences end; it probably sees the
hyphen in 3-D and thinks that the important part of the sentence is over.

That's one claim which is certainly false.
Being in the public domain means that it has no copyright or that
the copyright has expired.
For some reason people confuse terms and think that "free", "open source",
"freeware" and "public domain" all mean the same thing, even though they
don't (*specially* the last one).
