Considering the growing interest in high dynamic range images, would it
be worthwhile to add the OpenEXR format (www.openexr.com) support to
POV-Ray?

Regards,
John

Hi John,

I think it's really worth for output (generating HDR-Images with POV-Ray)
and input (for HDRI-Lightning).

'worthwhile' is somewhat difficult to decide. I'd say it is probably
quite a lot of work (that format seems rather complicated) and requiring
everyone who wants to build POV-Ray from source to download an
additional 9 MB package is not what i would consider as user friendly.
And it is mostly unnecessary - There are other high dynamic range
formats that are much more straight away to implement and use.

IMHO it would be better to first improve the TIFF support in Povray (wich is
VERY basic at the moment (at least in 3.5, don't know if that changed in 3.6)),
wich also supports floating point pixel data.
I don't really see the necessity of a new format if the same results can
be achieved with an well established one, with better compatibility.

Unless it is for some reason much easier to implement. (I tried to improve
TIFF support in Povray, but gave up because libTiff/its documentation
IMHO is really crappy, but I don't know if thats better with OpenExr)
