I want to use area-light in an animation, but I understand that jitter 
should be avoided when animating, so I was wondering: is there a good 
(not so random) alternative of using jitter in area-light to avoid 
shadow bands? Too many lights in the grit makes rendering to slow.

Not realy. Add adaptive <value> to your area_light, it can realy speedup 
things. I never tried it but adding some turbulence to your light may 
help if it's possible. Using spotlights instead of regular light, use 
high light counts in close light and sparce ones in far away ones.

I have tested it in combination with focal blur. And with good/high focal
blur settings, there will be no jittering. Even with adaptive 0. See
http://imp.3dhost.net/33.mpg (2,431,794 bytes) at the IMP website if you

I've found that "adaptive 1" with an area light as large as 17x17 creates
very nice shadows without taking long to render - the 17x17 sampling is only
used in the soft shadowed areas.
