What is the purpose of *forcing* user to download newer version of Pov 3.6
(and is there new beta for Linux already?)
[povrayraf256@rafal04rh9 renders]$ povray swamp_v101.ini
This pre-release version of POV-Ray for Unix has expired.
quite frustrating :/

I think that there realy should be an option like --force that will skip
checing date - for users that know what they are doing and want to
a) use software *now* without reistalling
b) wan to test older version i.e. for comparsion/benchmark/etc

Simplification of the support. If developers can't trust you that you
understand that using beta-kind software for urgent purposes is _your_ risk
and you do not know how to find next beta yourself then developers can't trust
you that you do not forget/find install final release complaining about
outdated beta bugs forever.

Of course, it was announced in "What's New" section of proper page. Beta page
contains explanation "The purpose of the expiry is to avoid the developers
being bugged by reports of issues that have long since been fixed."

How about just downloading the latest beta version or not using a beta at
all? From your message I get the clear impression that you should not be
using a beta version at all because a beta version is not even supposed to
be used to replace the latest release version.

If you don't like beta-testing the next version of POV-Ray, then don't
do it. It's that simple.
The reason why the beta expires is to avoid people reporting bugs which
have already been fixed in a later beta.

If you really need to do this (which means, if you are *incapable* of
downloading the new version), you can set your system clock back. At least,
it worked for the 3.5 beta.
But as Thorsten said, there's really no reason to do that if you're capable
of downloading the new version. If you want to participate in the beta test,
then participate in the beta test - using an outdated beta version won't
help anyone. If you're not interested in beta testing, use 3.5.
If you choose to change your system clock, be sure to set it back before you
come posting on the POV-Ray newsgroups, or else you'll mess up your posting
times.
