Here's a forwarded message from Rafael about access problems. Any
suggestions/comments?

I quess maybe You can please send this into newsgroup (maybe general?) for
me,
since I realy can not acces group for few days.

Tracert:

I wonder if using a longer timeout wait would show anything more? For
example, tracert -w 10000 povray.org

I've had some trouble using tracert recently. After not using that for a
long time, I decided to see some timings by pinging and it just timed out
all the time. I did a tracert and all I ever get is a "destination net
unreachable" at the same location. Apparently it's a new route the Internet
traffic takes from a nearby town to the outskirts of this State's largest
city. My ISP has been making changes, upgrading the hardware locally for the
past year or more.

Anyway, so I can't ping or tracert povray.org but could be for a completely
different reason. Besides, I don't know much of anything about this kind of
thing. The website is accessible through Internet Explorer.

Hmmm, maybe a firewall could cause the trouble? Again, I wouldn't know if it
would or not.

a significant portion of the network now bitbuckets icmp echo
responses/requests -

so MS tracert and the old Van Jacobson udp based traceroute tools fail a lot

proper traceroute tools use different methods (ports, fin/syn packets,
etc....)

try lft ( http://www.mainnerve.com/lft/ ) , it gets around firewalls and
uses intelligent tcp port
switching - e.g.; (there are binaries avail for Win (cygwin) and Linux as
well as source code
for Unix systems)

Routing problems are the responsibility of the internet access provider.
This problem has nothing to do with povray.org, it simply happens that the
povray.org IP is one of the addresses for which the routing of the access
provider or one of the intermediate carriers fails.

Consequently, telling the local ISP is the only possible solution if this is
commercial access. If it is a dial-in or DSL ISP, I would just wait.
Trying to tell them via a customer help line that _they_have a problem will
be hopeless. There are too many Windos users they have to deal with on a
daily basis that don't even know how to turn on their computer. Thus they
assume everything is fine with their network and the user is just stupid
;-)

ABX has the same problem btw. - so it seems at least that it's not just
a problem of a single ISP but a regional one.

Hi,
the problem just fixed itself, now I can access povray.org (www. and news.)
again :)

> Routing problems are the responsibility of the internet access
> provider. This problem has nothing to do with povray.org, it simply

Wrong. I had no problems accesing *any* other pages, and tracer clearly
shown that the problem is right here:

  10 274 ms 276 ms 299 ms sl-gw27-nyc-9-2.sprintlink.net
  11 * * * (Time out)

but I agree that this is/was not the problem of PovRay.org *server*, but
the packets where lost quite far from my ISP (after international Telia
provider) so the problem was localized near PovRay.org server.

Good to be back here :)
Thanks for Fwd: my email, Dennis.

I'm directly in national operator so it was problem of half of my country.
Works fine now. Let's start new week...

I also could not connect to povray.org (http and news) during
the whole thursday afternoon to saturday evening. It seems to be back
again since sunday early morning. Anything else was accessed normally
through my university connection. Did any of you developpers (Chris,
Thorsten, Christoph, ...) could access it normally at that time ?

I could connect fine via DSL (Arcor), but from work (Fraunhofer/GMD St.
Augustin) could not connect to povray.org.
