Hi,
Is there an easier way to do this? I have about 9,000 lines, one of several
mesh2 objects, in a pov file, that I want to select in order to copy and
paste to another pov file, which also contains several mesh2 objects. The
only would I know to do this is to start selecting and scroll, and scroll,
and scroll.......and scroll until an eternity later I finally have the whole
thing selected. It seems like one ought to be able to tell Povray to "select
from line 8605 to line 17361" and it would be done, but I can't find any way
to do that, nor can I find anything in the documentation about it. Am I
stuck doing it the hard way?

If I'm understanding what you're asking, how about this? Select the first
line, then page/scroll down until you find the last line, and SHIFT-click on
the last line. This should select everything between the two points.
Hope this helps.

Steve,
That's what I'm doing now. The problem is that it takes 5-10 minutes to
scroll down that many lines.

You can do this in general way applying method like in... CSG object.
Applying intersection can be replaced with applying difference if you
understand what I mean :-)
BTW: what about asking gui specific question in gui specific group ?

If you grab the scrollbar at the right and drag it down, it shouldn't
take too much. That's what the scrollbar is for.

If the file is very large it is difficlt to do this accurately. One
thing I try is to devise a strategy where I select off the topmost block
and either delete it or copy it. That way I can use the Find to get to
the middle point, mark it then 'scroll bar' quickly to the top and Shift
click there to select the block.

In case you didn't here is sequence of keys needed to cut lines from 8605 to
17361 within POV-Ray for Windows editor assuming your file is open and active
Ctrl+G
8
6
0
5
Enter
Shift+Ctrl+Home
Del
Ctrl+G

7

Shift+Ctrl+End
Del
where 8756 is 17361-8605 :-)

Wouldn't it be easier to just put the several thousand lines
in a separate .inc file? Then you only need to move one line
in the .pov file. ;)

#!/usr/bin/perl
while ($ARGV[0] =~ /^-(start|end)=([0-9]+)/) {
$cmd = $1;
$number = $2;
if ($cmd eq 'start') {
$startline = $number;

$endline = $number;

Save it as "clip" and ensure however you do so for your OS that it is
executable.
Use as (on Unix)
clip -start=xx -end=xx filename
On Mac OS X, for example, I might use:
clip -start=8605 -end=17361 meshes.pov | pbcopy
And then I could paste those lines into another document.
On Linux, I might use:
clip -start=8605 -end=17361 meshes.pov > wantedmeshes.pov
to put those lines into a file called "wantedmeshes.pov"
I don't know the syntax for using perl on Windows, but it would probably
be similar.
Leave out -start to start at the beginning, and leave out -end to go to
the end. You can do multiple files, but it will start counting from the
first file and continue on counting through subsequent files, which
probably isn't generally what you want.

Copy the file into a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel), do the job there and copy the
result back.
Actually I often use Excel for this sort of job.

It's been suggested once as a solution by Tim Cook, but it deserves
re-emphasising - right proper include files.
It's then very easy to either add or comment out, or modify a boolean to
change the scene option, and, in your case, which files are included.
This is the portable and native method in pov for doing what you want - why
re-invent the wheel?
Just have stuff like:
#declare do_man = false;
#declare do_woman = true;
#if(do_man)
#include "man_msh.inc"
object(man)
#end
#if(do_man)
#include "woman_msh.inc"
object(man)
#end

Yes.
Go to the first line of the mesh file. Place a bookmark (Ctrl-F2). Go
to the opening brace of the mesh and find the matching closing brace
(Ctrl-] I think). Place a bookmark there on the line below the closing
brace. Go to the first bookmark (Shift-F2), then click and hold the
mouse button at the beginning of the line. Now go to the second
bookmark (F2) without releasing the mouse button. Voila.
Just tried it BTW. It works :)

Oooooouch, so long as it works for you, I guess it's alright.
Excel does have a limit of 65,536 lines though.
I try as much as possible to stay away from word/excel, you
know whats going in but cannot rely on what comes out :)
There are tons of "programmer" text editors out there up for
grabs, I very good one I have been using for a number of
years is editplus, you can have a look here.
http://www.editplus.com/.
It supports
- PC/Mac/Unix line termination, you can switch on the fly.
- Plain-text, unicode, UTF-8
- It supports keyword highlighting for many languages.
(you can define your own for POV code too)
For what it's worth, it can come very handy to some of you.

Peter,
Your answer looked like just the thing I was looking for, but when I tried
it, it went from the first bookmark to the second, as predicted, but without
highlighting. I tried it several times in several different ways, but the
best it would do was highlight the last line. Is it possible you left
something out of your instructions?

Are you sure? When I tried it over a large number of lines, only the

I tried what you suggested, and it deletes everything else in the pov file
except for lines 8605 through 17361. Not exactly what I had in mind.

He didn't say you should to both at the same time, did he? But really, how
to use the scrollbar and select text is so obvious, everybody else in this

Why ? You asked how to select lines from 8605 to 17361 in an easy way. Select
for what? For copying into another file? Do Ctrl+A to select content in
editor, Ctrl+C to put it in clipboard, and finaly call undo twice to return
earlier cuts and be at initial state.

But now you can select *everything* and copy it. Then undo your actions and
you get what you want.
Really, I don't see why you are so inflexible with this, after all, the
"problem" you have is exactly the same in every other GUI text editor. And
you got tons of suggestions how to do what you want easily. If you can
describe how you think this should work without you doing anything, then by
all means, I think we all would like to know! If not, then just use one of
the many methods suggested and live happily ever after :-)

ABX, Thorsten,
OK, OK, I get your point. I was just wishing that there would be a *really
simple* way to do it, such as "select text between lines 2000 and 10000".
Maybe it would be something for future development?

I'm sure you are refering to complexity of substracting line numbers. Just
replace order of cuting parts and then no math is necessary ;-)
> Maybe it would be something for future development?
Seriously, how long do you use POV-Ray? How many times you needed it earlier?
I work with text editors for more than 10 hours a day for years and I do not
remember if I needed it at all. But as you see there is many workarounds I
could apply for my needs my favorite if I wish...

It doesn't work for me... But it would be nice if it worked. Sometimes I

I found it! Not being one to accept defeat easily, I did a Google search for
"selecting text" and found this: Put the curser at the beginning of the
first line. Holding down the shift key, use the scroll bar to move down to
the last line to select. Then simply click below the last line, while still
holding down the shift key, and, voila! The desired number of lines is
selected. I tried it, and it works. It takes about five seconds. This is the
*easy* solution I was looking for.;~^}>

Huh ? In what way this is simpler than the method Steve Martin proposed to you
in first answer of this thread ? In his method you did exactly the same except
pressing Shift once during final click instead of holding it down for whole
five seconds.

Read the original instructions:
1. Click on the starting place, where you want to start to select.
2. Go to the ending place, ie the last line you want to select (you
can use the scrollbar to go there).
3. Shift-click on this ending place.

ABX,
You're right. I must have read Steve Martin's Post too quickly to understand
it correctly. Please accept my Appologies, everyone (especially Steve
Martin), for being so obtuse.

That solution isn't what I'm looking for. When I have very big files (mesh2)
I can't rely on the scrollbar to find the line I want. It's not accurate
enough. Finding (and selecting) the first line is easy - usually I use
'search' for an opening brace. But finding the next closing brace is not
easy. It's "hidden" somewhere in the mess (mesh) and therefore, I end up
using the arrow keys for several minutes to select the right set of lines..
No complaining though.. but you brought up the subject.
Regards,
Hugo

Hugo,
Try this: Click in front of the first bracket, then go to Search and click
Match Brace, or simply click ctrl+], and it will go to the last bracket of
the mesh. At the bottom of the window there is a box that tells you the line
number, e.g., L:17361. Remember that number. Now go back to the beginning of
the file and click in front of the first line. Now, when you click on the
scrollbar, notice that a box will appear at the middle right of the screen
with the line number in it. As you pull the scrollbar down, the number goes
up. You should be able to get within a hundred or so of where you want to
be, and then you can use the up or down arrow if you need to. I just tried
it and found that it's not hard to get the end of the mesh right within view
by looking at the scrolling page number while using the scrollbar. With a
little practice it becomes a very easy task.

This will probably not answer the question OR have been mentioned
several times before but having read this thread today I realized I have
to do this quite often. I never thought about it until today. Here's
what I do: move the cursor to the start of the selection. Hold Shift
down and move the cursor down. This can be done by simply scrolling with
the down key, scrolling faster with the PgDn key or jumping to the end
of the file with Ctrl-PgDn. When you're at the end of the selection
release the Shift and presto. I guess the relevant point here is that
you don't use the mouse (prevents RSI too).
Perhaps we need a tutorial on scrolling or should this just be part of
the POVRay documentation?
Cheers!
Remco

Remco,
This reply is not targeted at you but to the entire thread.
What you describe is part of the most mudane functionalities
of windows and whatever happens to run on it (so long as the
authors of said 3rd party software(s) respect the common
windows' way of doing things for basic editing methodes).
I do think the docs should mention that is uses basic
windows' editing methodes along with anything else it can do
that is not common to windows. These basic functionalities
should be second-nature to most, unless they are also new to
windows.
This could also apply to any other operating system you may
be using.
I do believe this entire thread should have been in
povray.newusers to begin with.
My 2 scales :)

I don't mind, I was just having fun...
I completely agree with what you're saying but somehow this thread had a
sort of bizarre appeal.
Cheers!

Perhaps they should, but I've been using Windows for 8 years and still have
only learned the things I'm forced to learn. The things I need to do often.
I think most users haven't taken a course in Windows. We focus on the
software that run on Windows, not Windows itself.
The thread could have gone elsewhere. I agree.

Hugo

Why do you think one needs to go to a course in order to learn to
use Windows?
Besides, I would bet they don't teach these kind of things in those
courses.
