Hi,
This is almost certainly a FAQ, but things change so fast...

I'm thinking of putting together a computer from components,
to sit alongside my overworked multimedia P3 linux box,
dedicated to rendering. Just a cheap slow disk, ethernet card,
CD ROM and a motherboard, enough to install linux on.
I don't follow the CPU market, and was wondering what's currently
the best, fastest for rendering, especially FPU-wise?

I wouldn't trust the answer I got from a sales assistant in
PC World :-)
