After following some of the advice I was given here, I made a couple of 360°
spherical panoramas.
"Family" image
Quicktime version
http://www.oyonale.com/ldc/english/family_day_qt.htm
Java applet (PTViewer) version
http://www.oyonale.com/ldc/english/family_day_jv.htm
Both pages are 650 kb. I'm sorry for the size but smaller ones and higher
compression don't do justice to the image.
Another panorama image is a view of the International Space Station. I found
a very nice POV-Ray model of it and thought I'd give it a try. I added it to
the "Reach for the stars" museum section.
http://www.oyonale.com/iss/english/museum_08.htm
The page shows a static image and there are links to the QT and PTViewer
panorama versions (around 200 kb each).
I've only tested this with IE6 under XP so if you have problems with other
browsers and OS let me know.
The PTViewer applet is part of the Panotools suite and can be downloaded
here
http://www.path.unimelb.edu.au/~dersch
QT is slightly faster than the applet for rotating and zooming, at least for
the large panoramas. Also, as the 6 panes are loaded progressively, you can
start enjoying it before it's fully loaded. The main drawback is that it
requires QT 5 or higher installed.
The applet is probably more cross-platform and depends on Java 1.04.
For the QT version, converting the POV-Ray BMP (spherical camera, 360°
angle) to QTVR was a little tricky. Most people used to do it with the
"developer's code" utilities provided by Apple (MakeVRPano, GoCubic) but
these utilities are barely functional with more recent systems or
configurations and Apple removed them from its QTVR utility page. You can
Google them up to find them on some personal websites and see if they work
with your system.
The alternate solution I used here requires 2 free utilities (Windows only)
: one is Panocube http://www.panoshow.com/panocube.htm and PTStitcher from
the Panotools suite above. It's quirky (Panocube must be installed in a
directory without spaces in its name...) but it does the job, and I haven't
come across a better (free) way to create spherical/cubic QTVRs with Windows
For PTViewer, no conversion is required as it reads a JPEG. There's a
version supposed to work with QTVR but it didn't work for me.

Hi.Family Day is fantastic and works fine on Win 98 SE (QT version). Do you
have time to explain with some detail how you created these, from the POV
scene to the final viewing stage? That would be a huge help...
Thanks very much,
Dennis

How did you get the car up to the ISS? And why the trouble
of sending it up there?
But nice to see Family in 360, though there's really
only one thing to focus on. Its like with Radiosity: You've
got to design some images keeping some things in
mind (like radiosity, 360 degree view, mirrors etc)
Regards,
Tim

Fantastic work, I'm really impressed (and also very interested in a deeper
explanation of the process if it's possible, as Dennis said).
Worked fine with W98SE, IE 5.5, java version.
Now I'm going to download some tools
Thanks for the links.

Safari 1.0 under Mac OS X 10.2.6
quicktime version - no problems
java - browser crashed immediately [I'd place the blame on the
browser :-)]
Mozilla 1.2.1:
Java loaded OK, but needed a click to go beyond the 100% complete
message. Much slower than the QT version [which is to be expected,
I guess]
Trying to load both the QT & Java in Mozilla gave me an apparent
lock-up, but the QT looked to be loading just fine.

Great! Is there a chance that you will post a even more detailed high res
version so one can zoom in and look at all the details?

Thanks for testing! This basically confirms what I thought from previous
experiences with Java, which is that while the applet version may be more
cross platform, allowing people without QT to see the image, it is also more
prone to problems... I guess I'll have to continue with both versions then.

In fact, "Family" was probably the only image that I could turn easily into
a 360 pano, as my other stills are not meant to be seen from another point
of view. I wanted to do the "Wet bird", for instance, but I realised that I
had to create other buildings, add more cars (and create headlights for the
cars...) etc. And yes, a good 360 pano should be created on purpose from the
very start. It's quite an interesting challenge.

Thanks!
I'm not sure if you mean the "Family" image itself or just the QTVR... I may
write a "making of" in the future, but in a nutshell it's just a bunch of
pipes created with my "MadPipe" macro with additional props (particularly
some from http://www.baument.com) and Poser characters thrown in.
If you mean how to turn the POV-Ray scene into a QTVR file, here's how to do
it:
- create a scene using the spherical camera and angle=360°
- download Panocube http://www.panoshow.com/panocube.htm and the Panotools
suite http://www.path.unimelb.edu.au/~dersch
- create a directory so that there is no space in the path name, such as
c:\panorama (but NOT c:\program files\panorama)
- unzip the Panocube file and put Ptstitcher.exe and Pano12.dll in this
directory
- drag and drop Ptstitcher.exe on Panocube.exe : this tells Panocube where
Ptstitcher is and needs to be done only once
- to create the QTVR, drag and drop the image file on Panocube.exe, and
voilà, Panocube creates the QTVR and corresponding HTML code
Other conversion options (size, etc.) can be edited in the script.txt file.
There's also a commercial version of Panocube with more options.

Why not? To get a panorama like this the image is already 3000*1500. I'd
need something like 12000*6000...
It's much more work though, because I'll need much higher radiosity for some
of the parts otherwise the Poser folks will just look like they have some
skin disease. I had this problem with the still version and I had to go
through the painstaking process of using masks to insert high radiosity
versions of the characters into the low rad version of the rest of the
scene. Well if I can find the time I'll have a look.

Oh, I see. I thought this is a cube map and you had to render six sides...

It's the best 360 image I've ever seen. Most 360 images are photos and
always have artifacts or seams, but not here. Very impressive.

If you want to get nitpicky, it's not a 360° image, it's a 64800° image,
being spherical, not cylindrical. (At least, I *think* the number is
64800, calculation could be wrong)

No. Degrees (and radians) are used only to measure 2-dimensional angles.
You can't measure spatial angles (I think that the mathematical term
is "solid angle") with degrees.
Solid angles are measured in steradians. The solid angle subtended by
a surface is defined as the surface area of a unit sphere covered by
the surface's projection onto the sphere.
The solid angle corresponding to all of space being subtended
is 4*pi steradians.

Hi Gilles,
Tried it but when dropping the image on the exe, it says "Not
equirectangular input" ?? (For info, my picture size is 400x400 (dividable
by 4) and the camera was spherical camera angle=360d -HORIZONTAL - what
about the vertical ?)
Thanks,

Though astronomers and astrophotographers like to talk about "squared
degrees"...

Absolutly great. The Java applet works fine with Linux, KDE 3.2 and
Konqueror!

I think that equirectangular images needs a ratio such as 800 x 400 or 1000
x 500 : width = 2 x height.

Yes, you are right. Equirectangular projection is width=2*height
Nevertheless, I am totally lost...
I managed easily to create the .mov panorama but I don't have Quick Time
(and it is impossible to get it as the set-up wizard is asking information
about the proxy and as I am working in a big organisation with firewalls
and password protection for the proxy).
So I decided to try to get it in Java. What should I do to get the Java
version of the pano ??
Then, I went to Gilles website to see the Java panorama of "My Family" and I
was hoping to find some explanation in the HTML code sourceit but it
totally failed to see the pano (although yesterday it was working great
???)
I downloaded yesterday the Java Web Start version 1.2.0_03 to be able to
play with the new version of POV-Tree 1.1 (which is working great) but I
suspect that this could be the reason why I can't see anymore the Java
pano...
I am not a Java expert so may be someone could direct me...

The java version of the pano is just the jpg image, no conversion is needed.
The HTML code is as follow :
<applet archive="ptviewer.jar" code="ptviewer.class" width="640"
height="480" >
<param name="file" value="../images/famille_jour_vr.jpg">
</applet>
> but it totally failed to see the pano
Too bad :( The applet is supposed to work with Java 1.04 or higher. I've had
this sort of problem with Java applets before which is why I don't trust
this technology very much...
Note that there's a version of PTViewer (available in the panotool suite)
that reads QTVR. I wasn't able to make it work (just got a red square) but
you could try it.
Also, there are other panorama applets (Live Picture, Go360).

Yeah, in fact, I just dowloaded the version 1.4.2 (build b28) - the latest -
and got the PTviewer applet from panotool. As you, I just got a big red
square. I will look for some other applets when I have some time (but I
stil don't understand why yesterday I managed to see it and today NADA!
Thanks for the info.
Cheers

Did you try it locally or on a webpage? Depending on your browser, there might
be security restrictions wich won't allow the applet read a local file, even
when the applet itself is loaded from the local computer.

Indeed, I tried to make my own locally (HTML page) and it is working great.
But when I check the same file on Internet, I get red square...
I suppose that the Cache Manager (from my office network) does not allow
loading of java applet...
So I will have a look on my personnal PC... But at least I know it is
working.
Thanks for your input

Yes sure I can, http://www.webkenya.com/pot_pourri/pano.html
Top and bottom panos use the PTViewer applet
Middle pano use an other Panorama applet
Just let me know if it works.
Thanks

Top and bottom are okay (well, they work, but the top image has a lot of gray
when you pan). Not getting anything on the middle one.
Whereabouts in Kenya are you? Anywhere near Malindi? (only place I've been in
K).

Thanks. The gray part is the background. It was just a test image, nothing
like Gilles's pic :)

Well, in the large Nairobi city (the green city of the sun)... I stay in a
suburb called Karen (Karen Blixen territory) near the National park and the
girafes.
Indeed, Malindi is a very nice place (except that the town is tiny)...
Tourism is bad nowadays in Kenya since we had many terrorism alerts (and
most air companies have stop their flight).
