Yup, too much work for the moment.
And you're not implying that I'm one of the best, are you? I personally
think I do pretty fine, but most of my images don't really touch realism,
only some pseudo-realism, where it is still obvious that I'm rendering.

Haven't gotten to the dirt-level yet. :-)

Wow...
I don't see the 21600x21600 images though. I see them mentioned, but no 
links that appear to lead to them...and it would be nice if they were 
available in a non-lossy compressed format, such as PNG.

No to spoil anyones fun, but you do realise that to scale
the earth is smoother than a pool ball :-)

I know, but I've now got a high-res map from which
I can take close-ups or cut certain sections for interesting
heightfields.

So 8 bit grayscale should be more than enough resolution.
You exaggerate the smoothness though...it is very smooth at that scale, 
but there are visible irregularities.
