You can get this effect by making the surface not quite fully 
transparent. If you think about what causes shadows you should realize 
why this is necessary.

I'm not sure if I understood you right, but I think you're telling
him how an object casts shadows, while he wants to know how
an object may be invisible, except for shadows falling ON it.

But I don't know how that could be achieved.
