I'm wanting to convert some 3D files into Povray, so I cruised
through the FAQs and got this link but it appears to be dead.
http://www.stmuc.com/thbaier/tools.htm
Is it somewhere else? Just temporarily down?
Thank you, Miker

In fact the latest official Xfrog version I worked with had some really
annoying issues with the OBJ export (texture hierarchies were ignored in
some cases, MTL files were incomplete etc.) so that 3DS export was a better
and more consistent option. I know that the OBJ export was being rewritten
from scratch but I don't know what build is now up for download.
With a fully functional OBJ export from Xfrog, Poseray is indeed a good
alternative to 3DWin. The preview feature and the texture search feature are
extremely handy for complex models with many image maps.

3DWin seems to work well for converting the XFrog models exported as 3DS,
but I've found that I have had to tweak all the exported textures and
convert the leaf image maps before the models look right. When I finally get
the hand of the conversion I'll put up a brief tutorial...
Cheers,
Ian.

In fact I have a tutorial ready... It has examples, scene files etc. It's
just that during writing it I (and the people at Xfrog) became aware of the
bugs that were plaguing the OBJ export, so we decided to put the tutorial on
hold until these issues are solved which turned out to be more difficult
than they thought. The 3DS export works of course so it's possible to base a
tutorial on it. I agree with the tweaking, it's never 100% straightforward
due to the TIFF issues with POV-Ray this time, and in any case a texture_map
based on the black and white silhouette of the leaves is preferable,
otherwise there are highlights on the transparent parts, and this little
tweaking cannot be automated.
