I just recently bought a copy of Windows XP Pro. I installed Povray and ran
the benchmark. I was suprised to find that it was now taking half again as
long to run as it does under win98 and my own "build from source" on Linux
(expected, but not like this). Are there any changes and/or optimizations
to bios, processes, etc. that need to be made to bring these numbers up?

athlon t-bird 1.1 gHz
512 megs ram
via chipset
tnt2 vidcard

Linux/w98 benchmark = ~40 mins.
XP Pro benchmark = ~1 hr. 4 mins.

Avoid XP ?
(AMD XP are fine, M$ XP is not...)
Upgrade to a P4 so that M$ XP run faster (but floating point is
slower...) ? [But you will have to pay again for XP!]

Seek & Kill any XP-smart-wizard/assistant (any 'Find fast' Office option ?)

Good question. Does WinPOV support any cpu optimizations, such as SSE or
SSE2? I know in the q&t section of the help, it says that 3dnow is not
supported, but is anything else supported? And out of curiosity, has anyone
made a 64bit Windows compile of povray?

I wouldn't say Windows XP is that bad. I've actually grown rather fond of it
since upgrading from Win98, except for the fact that some of my old
software doesn't work (eg Driver).
