whats the best place to look to find the topographical data for a particular
area? I'm looking to make a heightfield based image of a place near where I
live.

It's a place called Carl Wark in Derbyshire, England (grid ref SK 259815)
and probably the highest resolution available would be best for a
heightfield, especially since the area of the place is no more than a few sq
km.
