I saw a render on Tim Nikias' site that used 'exponential reflection', but
there wasn't much more said about it. Could someone explain a bit more about
it, and also tell me how do achieve it?

  Perhaps the section 6.7.3.4 of the POV-Ray documentation might help
(look for 'exponent').
