Are there any good POV object collections out there? Apart from that at
povworld, of course.
I'm talking about POV object repositories, not just personal collections
(like, say, the excellent one of Gilles Tran), and not just mesh collections
(3dcafe and the likes). The Moray object collection is not the thing I'm
looking for either...
Did The PILE migrate somewhere or just died?

You have not excluded archives of www.irtc.org so is this sufficient ?
I doubt there is anything other than listed in
http://www.povray.org/links/POV-Ray_Include_Macro_and_Object_Files/Object_and_Scene_Files/

Thanks, but these do not qualify as "object repositories"... As to the
latter, great deal (most?) of the links it currently mentions are outdated;
so my guess is that there might as well be good sites not listed there.

Not really. The POV-Ray object collection at povworld is the most
comprehensive collection that I know of. It is really difficult to
get people to contribute to collections like these and for some
reason you will find that most POV-Ray users like to create their
own objects anyway. I think that it is new users who mainly go
looking for objects on the web. Once they gain proficiency with the
program they choose to make objects for themselves.

Depends on the object. I'm looking for a palm pilot or similar to go in a
scene with some objects I've created. I'd just rather put my time into my
objects.
When this is done, I'll make mine available :)

I would be happy to donate my library of objects, but the last time I
made anything available, I got so much grief from people who thought I
should code things their way that I refuse to let people see more than
snippets of my code any more.

... that is why there are so little professional artwork done with POV-Ray.
In fact, you're saying that it is better to code down to bare metal, that
real programmers use assembler, and, even if some lost soul is trying to use
C, he/she must develop their own printf().
How do you think, what all those 3DS plugins for? Unless POV-Ray community
has the answer to that question, POV-Ray will remain what it currently is:
the tool/toy for hobbyists. PLEASE note: I don't say that that's bad. I,
personally, enjoy playing with so much that it remains my favorite toy for
more then 6 years now. Microsoft, however evel they are :-), got it right
IMHO: "Never create from scratch".

Professionals usually are not fanatics. They use objects in different formats
with conversion to their favourite/available renderer.

Personaly I think that there is different reason than object repository: well
tested (and transparent for user) distributed rendering working with any type
of scene/animation (you know I'm thinking about radiosity).
