I've made a new Stereo.inc include file to support stereoscopic windows:

http://www.cx.hu/pov/stereo1/index.html

I've posted Stereo.inc and StereoTestA.pov to: povray.binaries.utilities
It's a simple include file with a few documentation.

This perspective camera seems to work correctly with
POV-Ray for Windows RC2.

Harolddd: Please try this one.
Hermann: How did you calculate the camera matrix in StereoPov?

Every comments are welcome.

Ok, soon as there is a working version of 3.5 ;-)

Hi!

I've started a new stereoscopy page at: http://www.cx.hu/pov/stereo/
Stereo window can be set up by SeteroCamera1() macro.
For ducumentation, see Stereo.inc.
Any comments are welcome.

Vic,
I stops and gives this message:

** File: D:\zipbinc\StereoTestB.pov Line: 32
** Warning: Camera vectors are not perpendicular.
** Making look_at the last statement may help.

** Scene contains 4 frame level objects; 0 infinite.
** Slab Building Error: Cannot use non-perpendicular camera vectors with
vista buffer.

Specify -UV at the command line (or in the Windows GUI next to the quickres
selector combo). This turns off vista buffer.

The camera setup in Stereo.inc is wrong. Harolddd wrote, that only parallel
left and right cameras gives good result. He is right. Nonparallel direction
vectors causes eye divergence at large to infinite distances. Plus it's
impossible to use vista buffer because of the non-perpendicular camera
vectors.

My conclusion: Cameras built into POV-Ray cannot render a stereo pair
properly.

Proper stereo window requires:

- Stereo camera type (like StereoPov)
or
- Custom camera type with a user defined "ray vector function"
or
- Image shift (right and up vectors at different image plane positions than
0.5)

A complicated solution employs camera ray perturbation and ortographic left
and right cameras. This is untested and too complicated.

Any suggestions?

Vic

It is interesting how people differ in their use
of POV-Ray. I always keep the camera at
about <0,0,-xx> so I can be clear about where
things are located. My camera is looking straight
forward into the z direction. If I place something
at <0,0,0> I will see it in the render. I set the camera
then create the scene. This also makes it easier to
do stereo renderings because the stereo base is
a simple mater of x dimension shift. Others people
create objects and then move the camera to give a
different angle on the object. If you do that it can be
difficult to position other objects relative to the camera.

Your sample scenes have the camera in an odd location.
I wanted to add some objects to see how they would
render, but even after some trial and error I can't locate
objects in this scene. The camera is at <0.5,0.7,-1>)*0.6
but where is it pointed? Not at <0,0,0> because I can't
see objects placed there.

Confused again,
Harolddd

Well, he recognizes the need for parallel cameras and
has a formula for determining how much to trim from
the rendered images, but doesn't describe a way to
have POV render directly to the trimmed state, which
is what we're trying to figure out. I think...

In most cases, I do it the same way. It is much
more easy to set up things. But then, I often find
myself "walking in with the camera", much the same
way I would do it with a real camera, going up and
down, turning, rolling etc...
