[apologies if this message shows up twice]

The contest has 28 entries. The themes range from abstract to muder mystery
to landscape to nature to machine design to povray logo. One person entered
5 quality and varied entries and I see no reason to limit this person to
more: it's blind judging anyway!

The rules and description are at:
http://news.povray.org/povray.general/21670/?ttop=22437&toff=50

The deadline is 02/28/02.

After this are you going to have a Shortest Animation contest?
I have a few ideas. <pause> Well since you asked:

Rather than animating a whole scene, a scene is created (a pool of water
on a green plane with cloudy sky, for instance) and you are to submit a
macro #macro fountain() that animates the fountain in the water. Each
animation will generate 12 pictures (cyclic) and either be posted as
MPGs or animated Gifs. (The problem with MPGs is the free CMPEG program
is limited to 320x240 iirc. I think there are free programs for
creating animated gifs that take larger pictures.) Then the animated
pictures can be judged, and you can apply a size function like you're
doing with the shortest code contest.

Other ideas for background - a road, an underwater scene, outer space
....

Just some semi random thoughts.

I suppose that you are going to make the page similar to the one in the
IRTC, that is, small thumbnails, which are links to the full-sized images?

The plan is:
a page with 320x240's and links to 800x600 jpg
a voting page with 32x24's and links to 800x600 jpg

I guess I can do the 320 x 240 much sooner. It might have already been
done, but the baby wouldn't go to bed properly last night....

As for PNG, well, IRTC doesn't do it.
i) I really don't want to.
ii) What are you suggesting? RENDER to PNG or have two pages, JPG (from
BMP) and PNG (from BMP)?

note: with such long page order can influence impression
~30 pictures can fit into
o) 6 x 5 table with image size 128 x 96
o) 8 x 4 table with image size 80 x 60
This way it can fulfill one screen, and can be easy to navigate

fast look to irtc sizes at http://www.irtc.org/stills/2002-02-28/view.html
and my suggestion is to double or triple this 32x24 or use the same table as
above

I had the same problem at night. My daughter broke my dream at 2 at night
singing until 4 :-(

> i) I really don't want to.

That's your choose, it was only suggestion. I proposed it becouse it is common
problem that in large set of different jpgs there can be one with artefacts.

But in the IRTC the entrants can encode the image to JPG, fine-tuning the
compression quality until they are happy with it.
In this case the entrants have no choice.

How about entrants submitting 800x600 JPGs of their entries? This way
nobody can complain.

Their complaint may be just, BUT this IS an amateurish, seat-of-the-pants,
volunteer operation. For personal reasons, my internet hookups won't allow
this.
