Go to section 8.1 of the POV help file (the legal document bit) and have a
butchers at the 'Revocation of Licence' section. Interesting reading... :O)

Just take a look at povlegal.doc...

"In this regard, "PC Format", a magazine published at the time by
Future Publishing, Ltd. in the United Kingdom, distributed incomplete
versions of POV-Ray 1.0 in violation of the license which was in
effect at the time. They later attempted to distribute POV-Ray 2.2
without prior permission of the POV-Team in violation of the license
which was in effect at the time. After the POV-Team was made aware
of their intent, they were contacted and were granted permission in
return for certain promises they made. They subsequently failed to
honor these promises.

There is evidence that other Future Publishing companies have also
violated our terms. PC Format's actions, particularly in relation to
the incomplete v1.0 distribution (which simply didn't work properly
due to files that had been deleted to fit on the magazine's cover
floppy disk - causing many users to blame us for the faults and
complain to us in email) caused us un-needed stress and support
headaches.

Therefore "PC Format", and any other magazine, book, CD-ROM, or any
other type of publication owned in whole or part by, or related in
any other way, to Future Publishing is expressly prohibited from any
distribution of POV-Ray software."

This affected me a while back when I wrote a double page POV tutorial for
PCReview, a UK based PC mag (now defunct, but published by Future
Publishing). The tutorial ran, but without POV on the cover CD, and I
suspect that it was only down to my pointing out to the magazine editor that
Future Publishing were not allowed to distribute POV, that it wasn't put on
the CD AGAIN!

BTW, did anyone actually see that tutorial? It was very basic, but I was
pleased by it. I can't remember offhand which issue it was in, but it was a
couple of years ago.

All the best,

Andy Cocker

AFAIK it's identical. I do occasionally copy and send the cover-disk I have to
the desperate and needy, so if you can't get hold of one, let me know....

It's a pity that Future didn't play fair. I hadn't noticed that section in
the docs and was surprised to read about it, though I can't blame you guys
for taking the action you did.

Strangely enough, it was through PC Format that I came to POV-Ray in the
first place. They were distributing v2.0 on a coverdisk in 1993 (I think)
and had one of Mike Miller's works (Grinning Jack on his rollercoaster) on
the front cover. I was almost immediately hooked. It's a pity I never got
any good .......

Also interesting is that Future still have nice things to say about POV-Ray.
Computer Arts website links to www.povray.org for a download of v3.1.
Here's a quote :

"The amazing Persistance (sic) Of Vision Raytracer offers outstanding
professional results..."

(I didn't say they could spell correctly :-)

Cheers

Rob

Yeah, I bet(!) I bet you're even more rubbish than HE Day, Gilles Tran,
Rune Johansen, Chris Colefax, John van Sickle and David Fontaine put
together!
BTW: Some obscure shareware magazine was where I first got POV 3.0
My computer has never recovered.

Just trying to crawl back into POV-Team's good books...

'Course not, they've only been making magazines for X number of
decades...

A friend of mine saw POV in a mag and told me all about it, I couldn't get
hold of the mag or the software for love nor money, so I took drastic
measures and finally got round to hooking my PC up to the internet so that
I could find this software. And yes I did find it on the internet, and
now my life has changed completely.

To answer my own question...

There is an upgrade offer - Poser 3 to 4.03 for £99 (excluding tax and
delivery). UK and overseas orders taken. Some details from
http://www.curiouslabs.com/store/specialcdupgrade, though you still need to
telephone the supplier to sort out the price (in the UK at least).

But! Has anyone heard if Poser 5 is coming out soon? That's usually when
these kinds of deals start doing the rounds.

Hmm, I may take you up on this - my local Barnes and Noble "may get the
magazine", and has a special issue, but not the Feb. one. Anyone have a
guess as to how long it might take? Or is it everywhere where it will
go....

It's amazing how Borders and Barnes & Nobles don't have this issue yet.
I've been back a few times and only get blank, slack-jawed typed answers
