Hello,
I appologize if this is too far off-topic, but I really need some expert
help.
I had to install a new hard drive to replace a defective one, and lost a lot
of stuff.
Before my hard drive broke, I had been making animations in the form of .avi
files using MS mpg-4 compression. I have Windows 98 S.E. newly installed,
and I downloaded Media Player 7.1, but for some reason, all of the programs
I used before no longer have mpg-4 compression as an option, and they did
before. When I look at my control panel/multimedia/devices/video compression
codecs, mpg-4 is no longer listed there, either. I was told once before that
installing media player 7.1 would automatically take care of this, but it
hasn't.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Steve Shelby

It's an option to have it done automatically (does it always work though?
hmmm) and I thought it was set that way by default.
No matter, just have a look in the menu at Tools|Options
Only file of codecs I see for DL doesn't actually say Mpeg-4 but maybe it's
in there:

-US/wmpcdcs8.exe

bob,
Thanks for the reply. I got the answer I needed on another email group.
Apparently MS has abandoned the mpg4 codec and it is now available elswhere.
This is a change from about six weeks ago, when I was researching this same
thing for someone else, and found that MS would not allow anyone else to
offer it. FYI, there's a cool website that I was given to get the codec.
It's http://dvd.box.sk/indexN.php3?pid=divx&prj=soft2&tools=codecs
