Has anyone out there created a rainbow using
photons (POVRay 3.5 preferably)?
I would myself but the time and space required
for 10 billion raindrops and 10 septillion photons
is more than I can stand.

Read the docs. POV can do rainbows automatically (rainbow{} object)

I wouldn't say "automatically", as it doesn't have anything to do with
light sources and you have to specify a color map by hand. However, the
result is as good as one can expect.

Chances are, he knows that. Chances are, he wants to simulate
a rainbow with photons, rather than fake it with rainbow{}.

Ahh.. no offense, but a rather ludicrous proposal. As he said, that would
involve a huge number of both refractive objects and photons.

For what purpose?

the 10 billion drops would not have a gaurnteed hit from a tracing ray, even
at ludicriously high resoloutions, they would have to be to small, this is
where media comes in
