For example, what ameks them different, and if they are better, why not

I don't know why is'nt available any megapov features in povray3.5!! I'm
very curious like you when developer team think to write code for extra
megapov (also now when Nathan Kopp is in team ) And other general (simple i
think) 3d specifications like nurbs, subd, vertex motion blur, post eff.,
etc...
I think pov has very huge potential to do favorite renderer of many people
!!

A lot of questions, some answers:
Where:
Megapov: http://nathan.kopp.com/patched.htm
Megapov plus: http://homepage.mac.com/chrishuff/povpatch.html
PovMan: http://tofbouf.free.fr/clothray/download_en.html
List of features can be found on those pages or in the packages.
Why features are not included in official Povray (3.5):
Many of the megapov features are included, although some are radically
changed. Others were deprecated by the POV-Team. Some also came too late
to make it into Povray 3.5.

Others simply do not work in a reliable fashion or are only half-finished by
the original author. The goal of POV-ray 3.5 is to provide _stable_ and
_working_ set of features.

No MegaPov features in POV-Ray 3.5? That's curious. I thought that
at least 90% of the new features in pov3.5 come from MegaPov.

Ok, so I can look at the mogapovs as the unstable development branch of
Pov-ray, and pov-ray as the tested and known to work branch?

Errr, yes, okay. That's about it.
Just that sometimes when a "feature" is added, or changed, or improved,
things elsewhere in the code can break. So, to be a little humorous about
it MegPOV is currently the most stable program because it hasn't been
changed in so long. P-R v3.5 is still undergoing constant change right now.
Apparently, had v3.5 incorporated all of MegaPov no one would be seeing the
beta of 3.5 and final release would have been months (and months) away,
IMHO. But I know many of us are awaiting the new and improved MegaPov also
just so we can move it into the \bin\ alongside pvengine.exe and continue to
toy with it from the new official version.
Please bear in mind that the 3.5 GUI has been upgraded as well.

Or maybe you can look at megapov as the general population of all dogs
world-wide, breeding willie-nillie. And look at POV-Ray as pulling out the
best lines and breeding them true and stronger.

I didn't know povray had a gui? Or is it only the windows version that
has a gui? Useing linux I note there is no 3.5 beta, but since I am a
newbie I prefer to use the older, know good 3.1.

It's worth "upgrading" to megapov - all the standard pov features are there and
certain operations such as media are much improved*. And I won't even mention
iso-surfaces (oops).
* your jet-engine would be a lot easier with megapov

Not in the sense that MegaPov has no official status.
Consider MegaPov as a third party private project.

yes I know that's have lot of megapov features but why dont't have general
and popular modelling tools like nurbs, subd.,etc?
I think it's more easy code than isosurf coding!! If PovTeam want to make
more popular the Povray i think it's necessary!
For example i'm developing a exporter from Maya to Pov and missing of
features like this most biggest problem for me!!

Do you really think that coding NURBS by hand is easier than isosurfaces?
NURBS are like bicubic patches, but more complicated, and I would really

What stops you from converting the NURBS to triangle meshes?

Nope. For my hand-coded bicubic patches, you have to find my IRTC
entry. (My only one so far. Maybe someday there'll be another contest
with an inspiring theme. I mean, really, Fantasy? Are there that few
interesting themes in the world?) It is at

The Macintosh platform has it also, although different from the PC platform.
Other possible (and non-GUI) platforms are probably left out for now because
it's the bug report frenzy time right now. Except I couldn't say for sure
anything about all that.
Even so, I thought Linux could run the graphical POV as well? Or is that by
preference to run a non-GUI version?

No. The official POV-Ray is developed and supported by the POV-Team. The
POV-Team is not responsible for any support or development of unofficial
versions like MegaPOV. Also one major developer (Nathan) of MegaPOV is a
member of the POV-Team, he is working on MegaPOV independently. It does not
imply that the POV-Team endorses MegaPOV in any way.
At no time has the POV-Team guaranteed that any feature that is part of
MegaPOV or any other unofficial version will be made part of the official
version of POV-Ray. Of course this does _not_ mean that we won't add some
of the useful and working features from unofficial versions, but as we did
when developing POV-Ray 3.5, we reserve the right to make any change we see
fit when adding such a feature.
This policy has been stated and explained before, I think a lot of it can be
found in the various articles in the faq group.

It can display the rendering in an X window while rendering, which is how
I do it. I code in an editor, save, click on the term and repeat last

Okay, thanks for enlightening me on that, I don't remember what other people
had said about it so I envisioned mostly Gnome or KDE or Wine (never have
used Linux BTW) being used with POV-Ray somehow in those. I used the
POV-Ray for DOS quite a bit years ago and it sounds a lot like how that was,
although you probably have a better editor than MS Edit like I had used. I
fluctuated quite a bit between the DOS and Windows ones but CodeMax really
ended that for me.

Well, I use emacs for POV-Ray. Aside from not having pretty graphical buttons,
it's probably one of the best full-featured IDE's available. I also use it at
work for C, C++, Java...
And it's not like my company can't afford other tools. :-)
http://www.acc.umu.se/~woormie/povray/
JDE for doing Java in emacs is quite nice:
http://jde.sunsite.dk/
But the main thing is that JDE's quick tour
http://jde.sunsite.dk/quicktour.html and it's users' guide
http://jde.sunsite.dk/jdedoc/html/jde-ug/jde-ug.html let you see a little what
one school of Unix/Linux users like.
Of course, there are more 'traditional' looking IDE's for Unix, but I find
Emacs fastest for my development.
http://anjuta.sourceforge.net/
http://www.slickedit.com/products/pr_products.php
http://www.jext.org/
http://www.metroworks.com/desktop/soltools/
http://www.metroworks.com/desktop/linux/
...
Well, actually, that kind of points out the general feel that people who use
Unix are all very different, and like to do things how they work for them, and
like the freedom to do so.

Unfortunatly it doesn't seem to be fixable. I spent several hours looking
through
options, the help file and the registry and I didn't find a way to stop
outlook
putting file: before every // that's followed by characters

Then you should use a news reader which doesn't corrupt articles.

With you knack of making obvious but useless comments, I sense a fine career in
IT support....

There's no way. Warp knows that, he is telling you that he thinks you
should run Linux and loose everything that you chose windows for to fix this
one oddity. Usually putting a space or a third "/" works just as well as
purchasing and installing a new OS what with all the new hardware you have
to buy to support it and the learning curve to make it do anything.

No, it was a sarcastic comment, which is a different thing. ;)

Your infinite wisdom seems to fail here.
(First you ignore all my posts. Then you put words in my mouth. I'm starting
to get annoyed...)

Quite true. Alternatively, you can be aware of this minor limitation with
your newsreader and fix it when it bothers you. Unfortunately, I'm having
trouble finding a way to add that extra space and/or slash to my signature
to make it Outlook-friendly; anyone got any suggestions? I can find a space
for the RON part, it's the PARKER part that seems intractable.

Even better. Your new career awaits...
Some useful tips:
Customers don't lie, but some problems may be attributable to "user errors".
Customers don't make stupid mistakes, they suffer from "intermittant and
unreproducable faults". Customers don't make unrealistic demands, they
"contribute to future development". Customers do not expect the impossible, they
"are not fully aware of the inherant limitations of computer programs..."

Hey, Outlook isn't doing it to me anymore! Hmm, OE 6 under Win2000 would appear
to be a solution. f-ups set...

You don't have to. Outlook will only put the file: in front of // when the
// is preceeded by
a space and followed by a character.
this will be file'd
Test file://test
But this won't
Test//test

O=union{Q("ABEFUQWS")Q(// RON

Where did you read this? Warp said something about using a proper
newsreader and mentioned nothing about OSs. I, for example, am using
Agent and Pegasus instead of Outlook and am quite happy with that. I
am virus-safe, the software doesn't try to think instead of me, and
follows the standards. These are all things Outlook failed on for me.
Oh, and I can run them under Linux, too, if I want to, and often do.
This is, however, not the main point, though it plays a role.
