I quickly glimpsed at an article in PC Format in a bookstore about .net (not
to be confused with the .net magazine).  Apparently .net would replace
Windoze. The actual OS would be loaded on a main server that has all the
programs loaded and users just log on to .net to use whatever program at a
monthly rental fee.

It doesn't sound good to me for PovRay. On the other hand using the .net
server to do the rendering might speed up things a bit.

Anyone know anything about .net?

Any thoughts on this?

In a way it could be good. Especially for really long renders. Submit a
render command to the server. After a few hours it sends you an SMS that the
render is complete and you log back in and see your result!

but then you just know you .net server is going to be running on a machine
with half the kick of the one your sat in front of now :)

and I am very sure they would not be pleased with you maxing it out for a
couple of days just so you can render your latest glass project!

No, ".net" is a Microsoft marketing name.  No new technology, just an
only one forcing you to register with them and to make you pay more for
their software.  It will make everything run a bit slower again and not
work half of the time, in short, it is useless and everybody will buy
it.

You mean, they're actually reviving the time-share model?  I thought that
died decades ago...
Personally, I prefer to have my machine in front of me whenever I need it.
Even if it _does_ idle for 90% of the time, it's the 10% of the time that I
really need it that's it's handy for.

As far as I know .net is a plan by microsoft of alleviating dll hell.
Programs will
run on top of a code manager. I need to read more about it but I
don't think it has anything to do with a common server that everything runs
on.

From what I've read of it, it rather looks like an applicaton-file server with
a licence server: it will use YOUR cpu and memory, but .net will get money
every time you decide to launch (and download, unless cached) an application.

This way, USERs won't stay with WinWord 2.0, but will automatically be updated
to the lastest versions (new bugs and fee included).

(P.S.: I do not like the idea !!!!)

That's correct. The software will be something like java. And will be 
run on your computer and your OS (might even be flavours of unix AFAIK).
