I know that this subject has been discussed at length in the news
groups, but It was never adequitely resolved. At least not to me.

When v3.5 build 173 was released, I downloaded it to try it out, but
every time I tried to render a scene, the program froze. The cursor
still moved, but the clock stopped and PoV just sat there either parsing
or with a white render window. It would do this for hours with even the
simplest of scenes. If I waited to long to force quit the program, my
computer would lock up for real, presumably because the system clock got
too far behind.

Shortly after that I had to erase my hard drive and reload the software
from scratch. This may not have been related. I have been working with
build 170 ever since.

Recently, however, I decided to download 173 again and see if it would
work. It doesn't. I still get the same problem, and I've tried all the
workarounds mentioned in the newsgroups. I'm running system 9.1.1 with
no wierd extensions, I've even tried running the program with extensions
off, to the same results. According to the last thread posted on the
subject, there's no reason it shouldn't work. Can anybody advise on
what might be wrong?

Regards,

(by the way, this should have been posted to povray.macintosh)

Have you tried the 3.5.1 RC builds (when they hadn't expired yet), build 181
and 185? They worked much better in Mac OS X, so I guess they also
resolved the issues in Mac OS 9. Unfortunately build 185 has expired some
days ago, and there's no substitute yet on the download page
(http://mac.povray.org/download/macosx102.html).
