Hi,
The TAG and The POV-Team are trying to get a better picture of how many
people here use POV-Ray on a Linux/Unix based machine. If you do have it
installed please respond to this message telling us on what version of
Linux/Unix, how long you have been using it and what version of POV-Ray
you are currently running. This information will be used to help better
support this platform.
Thanks for your help,

Nice idea! I'm using SuSE Linux 8.1; POV-Ray 3.5 and MegaPOV 1.0.
And well, I'm using Linux for about 5 years now.

I'm using POV-Ray on Linux for, well, must be more than 5 years now.
Recently I switched to the Gentoo Linux distribution. I've already used it
on Sun Solaris as well.

Gentoo Linux (which sort of defies a general version number), gcc-3.2.2,
kernel 2.4.20
POV-Ray 3.50c (compiled from sources).
I'm not sure if you're asking how long I've been using Linux or POV-Ray
so I'll answer both: Linux for about 2 years, POV off and on for about
3 years.
Btw, I'm not sure how clear a picture you'll get of the Linux user
base from within this newsgroup. Mostly you'll get a picture of the
Linux user base that are currently reading these newsgroups ;)

Debian GNU/Linux unstable, kernel is v. 2.4.20. Have been using it for
about 2 years now, I think (before that Red Hat). POV-Ray version is
3.50c, compiled and packaged by Debian.

I'm using POV-Ray 3.5 on RedHat 7.3. I first installed linux last summer and
have been using it since then. My first POV was 1.0, I think, I got it with
a magazine and immediately fell in love with it ;)

I'm using Linux (SuSE 7.1) on own computers since 2001 and using POV on it
since the beginning. Using POV in general since version 2.2.
A lot of different versions of POV-Ray currently in use, even when using
the plain official POV i tend to do my own build rather than the official
binary.
Also occasionally running POV on other Unix machines.

Great. An official RPM would probably be a good idea although a lot of
Linux distributions already include a version (SuSE seems to ship 3.5
since version 8.1).

Blue Box:
Mac OS X 10.2.5
350MHz PowerPC G3
384MB RAM
gcc (GCC) 3.1 20020420 (prerelease)
I've been using Mac OS X since the Public Beta.
Black Box:
Mandrake Linux 9.0
AthlonXP 2400+
512MB RAM
gcc (GCC) 3.2 (Mandrake Linux 9.0 3.2-1mdk)
And I've been using this since about last Christmas, when I got the
machine.
On both machines, I generally use jEdit to edit the scene files, and run
POV (compiled from source) from the command line. Recently I've
installed MegaPOV 1.0 on the Mac, and will probably be using that when I
need to do something locally on that machine.

Red Hat linux 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18-27) and POV-Ray 3.50c.
I'm using GNU/Linux at home since 1999 (more than 4 years now),
although I used it before at work during two more years. IIRC, my first
distro was from Caldera, later tried Red Hat 6.2, and I've been
upgrading this until today.
For POV-Ray, I usually stick to official versions compiled for my own
system, but I've also used Megapov pre-1.0 in the past, while waiting
for the official 3.5.

I have been using POV-Ray in Solaris for something like 5 years
(longer than I have been in this news server).
Versions of Solaris have changed from (IIRC) 6 to 8 (the one currently
installed in my work computer).
The computers have been SparcStation 5, Sun Ultra 5, Sun Blade 100 and
Sun Blade 150.
The POV-Ray versions I have used include at least the official 3.1 and 3.5,
as well as several unofficial versions (such as lots of MegaPov versions and
pvmpov).

Mandrake 9.1, POVRay 3.5 + 3.1g with KPovModeler 1.0
I also have a habit of installing it on every system that I get access to in
the hope that it will be discovered by others and that they will be
inspired to learn how to use it.

Red Hat 7.3, POV-Ray 3.1g, using POV-Ray on and off for
about five years, still quite a newbie.

I am running Slackware 8.1. I have been running Linux since 1996, when I

now running POV-Ray 3.5c for Linux.

Mandrake 9.1
Povray 3.5c
pyvon
(also going to try kmodeller now I have KDE3.1)
I've been using Linux for about 18 months, and Povray for about a year. I
don't use Povray much, just when I want a 3D image for something.

RedHat Linux (/etc/redhat-release reads 5.0 but it's really with latest
stuff, glibc-2.3.2 etc :) ), kernel 2.4.20aa1, used Linux since 1994.
Heavily patched Povray 3.5.

well... DJGPP 2.03 under DOS and MinGW 2.0.0-3 in console box under Windows
since they are fastest free command line solutions for WinDOS, They are rather
environment extensions/shells than Linux/Unix but use mostly the same tools and
accepts makefiles and scripts dedicated for Unix/Linux.

currently: Mandrake 9.1 & POV-Ray 3.5.
Started with slackware, from 3.5 i think, up to 8.0, get fed up with kernel
compilation and switch to Mandrake. Using povray on linux since version 3.0,
more or less

I never used a non-unix version.
I started with 3.0 or 3.1, can't remember exactly. That was in 2000 or 2001.
I now use 3.5 on several linux'es: an old SUSE, an old RedHat and a
recent Debian. The original 3.0 or 3.1 was included with the old SUSE, but
since then I always installed and sometimes compiled by hand. Parallel to
the official 3.5 I use a patched 3.5 on one machine (own unworthy patch).

Thanks for making this survey !
Installing/using:
* Always compiled/installed from source only, as non-root user.
* Starting from version 3.0 as of mid 1996, when I first got full access to
the internet :-)
POV versions currently in use:
* 3.1g and various patches (e.g. MegaPOV 0.7)
* 3.5c
Architectures:
* Linux (many kernels/distros) since 1998
* SGI (IRIX 5.x and 6.x) since 1996
* DEC/Compaq Alpha (Digital UNIX only) from 1996 to 2001
* Once I managed to compile (but not use !) POV on an old SUN and on one
Evans & Sutherland relic :-)

Debian 3.0r1, kernel 2.4.20, POV-Ray 3.5 (built from source), 4-5
years (since Slackware 3.0 I think)
P.S. We might want to get in touch with the Debian POV-Ray package
supporters, as a) they put it in the non-free category, and b) IIRC
they offer the documentation separately.
