the internet :-)
POV versions currently in use:
* 3.1g and various patches (e.g. MegaPOV 0.7)
* 3.5c
Architectures:
* Linux (many kernels/distros) since 1998
* SGI (IRIX 5.x and 6.x) since 1996
* DEC/Compaq Alpha (Digital UNIX only) from 1996 to 2001
* Once I managed to compile (but not use !) POV on an old SUN and on one
Evans & Sutherland relic :-)

Debian 3.0r1, kernel 2.4.20, POV-Ray 3.5 (built from source), 4-5
years (since Slackware 3.0 I think)
P.S. We might want to get in touch with the Debian POV-Ray package
supporters, as a) they put it in the non-free category, and b) IIRC
they offer the documentation separately.

3.5 on a SuSE linux 8.0 system. I'm usually using nedit or emacs as my
editor.

Now I just need Linux versions of Poser, World Machine & Hamapatch & I can
make a complete break (well, except for a couple of games...)

I use emacs in an xterm as my editor these days along with PovMenu for

Gentoo 1.4 with POV-Ray 3.5 (own compilation). I'm using Gentoo for 7
month now, switching from SuSE Linux (6.4 up to 7.3). Before that I used
POV-Ray on Sun Solaris.

I do most of my file generation in the Windows environment.
I use linux for the actual rendering of my scene. I have compiled Povray
3.5 on Mandrake 9.1. Except for a couple of sputters that were not Pov's
fault it compiled flawlessly.
I render under linux as the compiled from source linux version is much
faster than the Windows version (at least on my system). I create on
Windows because I like the built-in editor. The speed issue in linux's
favor has been present through the development and release of Pov 3.5. Pov
3.1 was always faster on Windows (for me).
I have used Pov under Mandrake 8.1, 9.0, and 9.1. Also under Redhat 6.1,
6.2, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, and 8.0.

You might be interested in jEdit...it is a *much* better editor than the
one built into the Windows version, and comes with a POV-Ray edit mode.
It's also highly customizeable, you could probably set things up to run
POV from within jEdit, though I just keep a terminal window open for
that. (Actually, it's a bit more complex: I boot my PC in Linux, mount
its hard disk on my Mac with Samba, edit files on my Mac with jEdit, and
render on my PC through SSH. It works nicely, including the POV-Ray X11
preview.)

I am NOT using POVRay on any other platform than Linux.
(I don't have a Windows box at home...)

I've been using POV-Ray or its predecessor DKBTrace since 1991 (on Linux

After *MUCH* trouble and a bad memory module, I finally got Debian
3.0r1 Linux (kernel=2.4.18-bf2.4) up and running along with win98
(win95b would install, but not run. ;-{ ) on my newly built Pentium
IV-2.4Ghz. POV3.5 installed on both sides.
Been a POV-addict since '99. Very new to the Linux world, using
POVlinux.tgx from povray.org.

*.inc files when run from X/KDE. From terminal, it can't find
/../pov../include. ??? Got povray.ini and .povray.rc files

Did you check your I/O restriction settings and do you have your library
paths set up properly? As a non-*.nix user those are the only hints I can
offer.

Looks like the POV I/O restrictions are set right, my personal files
are another story. I'll have to track down the 'paths' thing.
I did get Pyvon installed and running, had some trouble finding a
package that should have been 'required' by the Python 2.2 package
(Debian is very picky, except this time!!).
I had to use a CD to copy *my* scene files from my P II machine, so
everything is read-only, having to go thru it all and set write
permissions. What a pain.<G> (my ignorance of Linux doesn't help.)
My eyes are bleeding from reading so much documentation. :-)
Sloooooowly getting there. But, I gots kidneys<pointing to head>, so
I'll figure it out or ask the experts.<G> May have to fire up the old
Apple II to rest my brain-cell a little!!
I've always wanted my machine to boot into POVray, then run win95b
when needed. Assuming this survey is positive, will that be the object
of a new POV / *nix project? <G>ear<G>

Just tried terminal mode/command line, rendered
.../scenes/advanced/balcony/balcony.pov. Ran fine, did it in 4min
50sec @ 512x384(took over an hour on my old P II, @ 320x240), and even
showed the stats (which it didn't before).
In Pyvon (v1.3, X/KDE) it still can't find the 'glass.inc' included
from 'table_stuff.inc', but looks like it is using a 'povray.ini' or
'.povrayrc' from somewhere.
Anyone know where I should look for the problem? A setting in Pyvon?
(I'm new to Linux, so please don't just say, "check *all* your *.conf
files". I feel 'lost' enough now!!)

I had a similar problem at one time, the cause was having old library
path lines in my .povrayrc file, I still had lines for 3.1g and this
caused terible probles just like the ones you're describing, so I suggest
that you take comment out your 3.1g lines and put new ones in to reflect
the upgrade to 3.5, here's what I have in my .povrayrc in the library path
section:
;; Library_Path=/usr/local/lib/povray31 ;; (+Ldir)
;; Library_Path=/usr/local/lib/povray31/include
Library_Path=/usr/local/lib/povray-3.5/include
Library_Path=/home/sjlen/pov
;;Library_Path=/home/sjlen/povincludes
As you can see you use a double semicolon to comment a line out. So the
only lines that POV is reading from the ablove are:
Library_Path=/usr/local/lib/povray-3.5/include
Library_Path=/home/sjlen/pov
And I think that if you're reading the .pov file from a read only device
then you need to specify the output directory and file name on the command
line (and I think you can do this in the .povrayrc file aswell), such as
$povray -i/dev/cdrom/pov/money.pov -o./money.ppm
See 5.2.2.3.2 in the povdocs it says you can use Output_File_Name= in your
.povrayrc file so something like:
Output_File_Name= /home/sjlen/pov/newrender.ppm
Hope some of that helps.

SuSE Linux 8.1 for about 4 months (since a disk failure
forced an upgrade)
Started using PovRAY shortly afterwards, from the binary
linux package on your site. The install needed tweaking
to make sure /usr/local/etc existed btw.
Can't seem to compile from source on this distro, but haven't
spent too much time on it.

I'm using POV-Ray 3.50c, compiled with gcc 3.1.1, on Sun Solaris 8/Sparc
I use Solaris since 3 Years and POV-Ray since 1 month.

hi, I currently use povray 3.5 on both Win2K and Linux (RedHat)
I plan to phase out the Win use.

Before that Amiga, and Sun.
Current Versions 3.5 and Megapov.

RedHat Linux 7.3, PvMegaPov 0.7 at home
Redhat Linux 7.2, PvMegaPov 0.7 at work (on one or three machines)
I want to use pvm version of 3.5, but I still have a lot of scenes and
librarires not modified for 3.5 and I don't have time to modify them :(.
Linux I'am using from kernel version 0.5<something>, don't remember the
date ;-)

Hello...
Guess I am WAY to late for the survey, but I don't read news very
regularly. Still, here's $0.02.
Running Linux (exclusively) for about 5 years now, and on/off for 7 years
or so:
Slackware 9.0 (more or less - handupdated)
Kernel 2.4.20
POV-ray 3.50 built from source - athlon optimized
gcc-3.2
Wrote my own (simple) front-end

Hi
I'am user sine DKBtrace 2.12. From DOS and OS/2 I'am now runnig it on Linux.
Current machines:
TB1300, Suse Linus 8.0, Pov 3.1 (included with Suse) and 3.5 (Micha Risa
compiles)
P4 2800, Suse 8.1, Pov 3.5 (included)

Hey, out of curiosity, have you tried to use pov-mode for Emacs 21.2? I
think that there's a conflict and would like to report that to the
authors, but it would be nice to have some confirmation. The problem
I've encountered is described in the 'Emacs pov-mode problem' thread.
