I have started a new project on my website, the 'Landscape of the week', a
program automatically generating landscape scenes:
http://www.tu-bs.de/~y0013390/lotw/index.html
The scene file for this program contains a lot of parameters and their
values are varied with the rand() function. By selecting appropriate
ranges for these values the variation of the scene can be influenced. I
hope i have managed to get a large variety of different looking scenes and
at the same time avoid to generate nonsense results.
Some previous test renders for this project can be found on:
http://www.tu-bs.de/~y0013390/lotw/old.html
where you will also find the past weeks' scenes in the future. The new
scenes will probably be started some time on sunday so they will usually
be available on monday (CET). I plan not to throw out bad looking results,
but i will try to improve the script consecutively. Until now i always
had luck with the results...
You can also rate the pictures using the forms on the pages.

All the scenes look very nice, but I don't think there's much of the "large
variety" part... Of course you might be talking about a large variety inside
the boundaries of a specific type of landscapes...But when considering all
the possible landscapes on the earth, the variation of the ones shown on
your page isn't that big IMO.

Of course it's all within the basic type of a sunny, nearly vegetation
free terrain. The few pictures do not yet show the full variety of
possibilities, but something like overcast sky (and appropriate lighting)
would be problematic (much higher quality radiosity would be required).
But there is still room for improvement of course, textures are fairly
simple right now and i also could add water, trees and other things.

Very nice indeed! And clever idea I must say.
But I noticed the lack of water (lakes, sea and, why not?, rivers and waterfalls). Is
this something difficult to handle in a random way? Or is this planned for future
versions of your landscape_maker_include_file (because you will eventually release
such include file, WON'T YOU? :-)

:-)
I left out water at the beginning simply for the reason that it would slow
down the renders a lot. At least a simple water plane would not be
difficult technically.
I decided not to publish the source, also because it's quite complicated
in total and writing documentation would be an awful lot of work, but
mainly because you won't be curious any more to see the next version...
;-)

Yeah, the "nearly vegetation free" part constrain the variety quite a bit.

But even if the weather is always the same, some vegetation and water would
vastly increase the possibilities I think.

And when you do that the challenge of generating believable yet random
landscapes have only just begun! ;)

Would be very cool if the program could use the data collected from the web
pages to generate scenes. In other words it picks values based on how
popular certain scenes are voted on.
