Saturday November 25 (well, two days ago !), in Paris, a dozen of
french-speaking POV-Ray users (including some famous ones, indeed),
coming from three countries, met each other around the table of a
noisy bar (damn football !).
There are two pictures of the event, visible here :
http://pov.monde.free.fr/index.php3?page=pm-povgars2001
Click to enlarge, and select invisible text below thumbnails to
see who is who, from left to right.

The French are always trying to outdo everyone :-)
Who the heck is the second guy on left in this:
http://pov.monde.free.fr/povbouffe2.jpg
He's unseen in both photos!
And I only counted eleven or twelve (someone took photo, no doubt) people at
the table, not 25. Were they too camera-shy like that other guy? ;-)
I think I can put names to a few people there.

It would certainly be nice to meet the most famous people of the POV-world.
In this light it's really a shame that the POV-world is pretty scattered
among the real-world.

Which people are the most famous people of the POV-world? David Buck?
Chris Young? Drew Wells? Dan Farmer?

If I were living off-post (instead of on Flugplatz Ramstein) I would
consider doing this for people in and around the Rheinland-Pfalz. But
my house is on post, and the security restrictions in place make it
troublesome to get a bunch of guests on-base. :-(

Wow did I distort that message. November 25 became twenty five people to
me, skipped over the fact there were really 12 like I had counted.
Sorry!
And I've figured out it must be Ferdinand not seen in the photos. Besides
the photographer anyway maybe, so who is it taking the photos? I can't read
French.

Below the thumbnails, there is some black text on black background,
select it to highlight it, and it gives the names from left to right.

I don't think that should be much of a problem, finding a place outside
should not be that difficult. But i'm not sure if there is enough
interest in Germany for such a meeting, of course it would be nice if i'm

<choking noise> Rugby = American Football?!?!?!?
<Shudder> I suppose I'd better point this out before somebody who likes
the game does it more forcefully. Rugby bears *very* little relation to
American football except for the general shape of the ball and the fact
that you can pick it up in your hands.

About Mike Miller, I was contacted by a Michael Miller who unfortunately
wasn't the right one :-(
About Truman Brown, this page says that he works as a programmer analyst for
City of LA. http://www.museumofcomputerart.com/brown.htm
This could be outdated, but the page below actually lists a Truman Brown
working as an Information Systems Coordinator for the same city.
http://www.ci.la.ca.us/bpw/contacts.html. So he could not be lost after all.

Thank God I'm still a living legend :-)
Seriously, back at SIGGRAPH '92 in Chicago, I was able to meet a number
of people involved in POV-Ray at that time. It was quite an
experience. I met Aaron Collins there who was involved in DKBTrace for
versions 2.0 and up. I've never actually met Drew Wells or Chris Young.
It would be cool to meet POV-Ray people, but as was mentioned, POV-Ray
people are around the world. It would be extremely difficult to get
enough people to get together in one place to make it work. As for
myself, I'm not very mobile these days. I have family and contract
obligations that keep me in Ottawa.

And as an added bonus you are not lost either, though until you showed
up here I had given up hope of ever meeting you (virtually speaking of
course).

While there are a lot of POV-Ray users here in the US it's a damn big
country and trying to travel for get togethers is a bit beyond the means
of most people. The only Pov people I know personally are a couple of
people at work I have introduced to the program. One of them has informed
my that his wife now hates me for it :)

Hi Christoph Hormann, you recently wrote in povray.general:

I might be able to make it, time permitting and if it's somewhere
central, like Frankfurt (I'm in Munich).

Good photos, but the text goes behind the images over here:
[sjlen:sjlen]$ netscape --version
Netscape 4.72/U.S., 31-Jan-00; (c) 1995-2000 Netscape Communications Corp.
Hopefully if the UK one goes ahead next March we will also have some photos
to show.

I can confirm this. I use version 4.70.

Right. Hopefully that'll coincide with some holiday at Uni so I can get
over. Also hopefully, I will have the money to afford the trip from here
to there!
BTW: I've written myself a short scene file for my signature, but it's
still too long. Can anyone give me tips on how to compress it?

The original being 830 characters (not counting the sig_file{}, but counting
everything inside it), here's one that's 563 characters:
camera{orthographic location -3*z}light_source{-3*z rgb 1}#local D =
seed(0);union{#local p =0;#while(p<=8*pi)#local F = pow(sin(p),4/2);#if
(p<pi)#local G = -F;#else#if (p<3*pi)#local G = -4*cos(p/2);#else#if
(p<5*pi)#local G=F;#else#if (p<7*pi)#local G=4*cos(p/2);#else#local G
= -F;#end#end#end#end sphere{<4*sin(p/2),G,4*abs(1-p/(4*pi))>, 1/3#if
(rand(D)<.5)pigment{rgb z}#else pigment{rgb .5}#end}#local p =
p+(8*pi/333);#end scale 1/((4+1/3)*2)no_shadow}plane{-z,-2 pigment{average
pigment_map{[1 bumps turbulence 0.65 ][1/16 rgb 1+z*3]}scale <5, 2, 5>/20}}
...Chambers

Thanks, that's got it down a bit. Now if I could just do Fourier
analysis on that piecewise curve for the ypos variable, I could break it
down into a set of simple waves (probably faster)
Warp! We need your help!

I can get an easyjet flight if I can scrape together the money; could
anyone provide me with a place to stay while I'm over? (Assuming it's
overnight that is)
Is there anything we should bring? I might do an image on the theme
"Reunion" or somesuch for the occasion; and of course I'll bring along
the Breezeblock™ for you all to marvel at!
