I went looking for some hi-res image maps of Earth, and I thought I'd
share the fruits of my labour with everyone. The following link has
some rather good maps of Earth and other planets:

http://apollo.spaceports.com/~jhasting/earth.html

The files are available in very high resolutions - the JPEG was 11.5MB!

This link...

http://maps.jpl.nasa.gov/

Has some decent maps too, with an excessively detailed set for Mars
(50+MB!)

The first link has many interesting links out of the page to other
resources, including a HUGE topography map of Mars (120MB), suitable (I
believe) for surface flybys. This one's making my cable modem think
it's using a phone line it's taking so long :)

I just hope I can use these images in the end (I have a very old
computer)...

On a sort-of related note, the JPL site also provides models of various
spacecraft. I'm not sure what they're like, but they are mostly DXF
format, I think, and about 0.5MB in size. I'm sure someone will find a
use for them...

Andrew,

from his own maps, there's lots of links to other mapping resources as well.

A lot of high resolution image data from other planets/moons can also be
found on:

http://www-pdsimage.jpl.nasa.gov/PDS/public/jukebox.html

but you will have to convert and put together the files yourself.

For your information, the jpeg takes 160 MB of RAM.

That is, if you have less, you will be in real pain
just to scroll the image. :-)

Thanks! Really interesting stuff, especially Saturn's rings. He's done
a far better job of them than I could have dreamed of doing.

Oh, that's only 3 times the RAM I have. No problem, I'll just leave it
to load overnight ;-)

I found a use for them. The Cassini model marked "detailed (to a fault)" in
Wavefront OBJ format converts well into mesh2 objects. The intended material
(aluminum, silver, gold, white, etc) is in the file and maps easily to
textures
in metals.inc. It looks really good! It just takes 10MB of mesh and 45sec of
parsing to use them.

All I got here was a forbidden message and a whole slew of popups. It could be
the host doesn't like me blocking cookies :-) If so, it's a shame, as I won't
get to see that nice image map :(

You could either:

* get a browser that has decent cookie support, and allow
  cookies only for that site

* enable the cookies, get the file(s), then delete the
  cookies
