hi everybody,
major newbie here... i'm trying to faithfully work my way thru
the user docs, but i can't seem to keep from getting ahead
of myself. anyway, i've converted a 3ds skull using 3DWin
and i've got my own lighting and camera and i've translated
and rotated it until it fits my way of viewing, BUT:
i need a good "old bone" texture. can anybody make any
suggestions? i've tried white marble, T_Grnt11a, and
T_Grnt9a, and i don't much care for them.
and this question should probably go in the newusers
group, but i'm here so bear with me, ok?
is there an easier way to look at all the textures than
to have to try them all out? do i need to make a pov with
all of them in it?

Bone texture would vary a lot, depending on age for one thing.
Creating your own is often all you can do if no suitable one already exists,
either that or modifying one.

Moray has a very nice built-in texture editor. Even if you only
use it for that, it's still useful.

I have found no use for the included textures for precisely the reasons
you are having problems with them.
1) Who knows what they look like
2) Who has the time to find out what they look like
3) Once you find out what they look like, who wants to use them
It doesn't take much playing with textures to learn how to make your
own. In fact, it might be better not to even look at the included ones,
since they are designed to be includes of many textures instead of single
textures. Get one of the several texture makers like the one in Moray, put a
few together and learn how they are done, watch the ITRC and learn how
others are making textures and RTFM to get started.
Lets see, bone... make some whitish browns, streak them with a scaled
agate or something, and add a normal of small elongated bumps?

i'll definitely hafta get the texture viewer and i didn't know
that moray would create textures! i'll give that a shot
tomorrow. i agree that its gonna be a rare occasion when
a canned texture fits your needs.
