Assuming a threshold of 0, an isosurface with function { (x^2 + y^2 +
z^2) - n } should be the same size as sphere { <0, 0, 0>, n } -- is this
right or wrong?

Wrong. You want the 'n' in your iso function to be 'n^2'.

Wrong.
(x^2 + y^2 +z^2) - r^2 =0 is sphere's equation.
BTW, Your computer's time seems to be wrong...
