I'm getting a new computer, and I'm just wondering whether to go for a
P3 866mhz 256mb ram, or a P3 1ghz 128mb ram? Which would pov be better
off with, the faster cpu or more ram? Thanks for your time and help.

Well, I'm going to answer this, even though I'm not sure that I'm correct.
I would say that there won't be a great deal of difference between an 866
and a 1000mhz processor, but doubling the RAM will help POV more.
Am I right? ( I'm still using P200 with 48Meg RAM, so I have no experience
to draw from in this case)
All the best,

The P3 1ghz with 256mb of RAM of course. <Grin>
My experience on a number of machines, says that RAM is far more important
than CPU, however, both play important roles in generating an image. Once
my images start swapping, rendertimes skyrocket and this happens with more
objects in a scene. So if you typically have tons of objects in your
renders then more memory will keep those objects in memory and not allow
them to be swapped out to disk storage.
A read from disk is still a read from disk and CPU power does nothing to
speed this process up. Avoiding the write to disk in the first place is far
more advantageous.

I have an Athlon 800Mhz chip and 256 Megs of RAM. I have found that having
a lot of memory has decreased my render times dramatically.

Having an Athlon 800 hasn't hurt you any either :')
From what I have heard here in the groups, and on some of the reputable
hardare review sites, the Athlon is a better choice for rendering
operations when compared to the performance of the P-III processor.
I for one have been very happy with my Athlon 950 also running
256 megs of ram.

Hmm, I'd have to go with the Thunderbird 1200 and 768M 266 DDRRAM. ;)

Only if you are running out of memory with your scenes.
If not, the CPU speed will help more.
It's not like povray looked and said "hey, there's more memory available
now! Woohoo!!! I'll use the extra memory to get more speed."

Also, megahertz aren't going to help the CPU as mush as gigaflops.

I would personally go for the latter - because if you feel the need to
upgrade, you can slot in a 128mb DIMM for about 60 quid now ($40?), while
upgrading from a 866Mhz to 1Ghz, would involve selling and re-buying (of
which P3's have been known to scarce when required). So I would go for the
1ghz, dream machine with the option of easy upgrading later. In terms of
POVRay performance I don't think there'd be much between them, but isn't
more RAM only especially useful with larger scenes?

About the only time I need more than 128 megs of ram is when I am
using recursive functions such as tree generating programs or other
memory intensive fractal type objects. Photons can also chew up
memory but again 128 is, for the average user, more than adequate.
I would say that for greater than 90% of POV-Ray users 128 megs
is enough. If you think that someday you will become a power user
of the program who is going to push the envelope you will want to
have at least another 128 megs of RAM at your disposal. I have 256
megs right now and will be upgrading soon to 512 megs but I consider
myself a power user rather than the average user of the program
and feel I can justify the added expense of more memory for my
system based on my use of the program.
