I'm not HTML expert, but such HTML link should work:

I don't know about others but I hate sites that do that.

I agree that those websites are very anoying... What I would suggest would be to
load a different file.html in which there would be two frames, a little one in
the top for "Go Back the My Website", Simple, Small and not Anoying. And the
rest of the page goes to the linked website...
What do you think?

First off, loading someone else's pages in your frameset is a Very Not
Good Idea. (I believe this has actually been declared illegal.. somewhere.)
Second, Frames Suck(TM).
Third.. what, you can't use the "Back" button, you need a link to take
you back to the page you were just on? Sheesh... :P

hmm, how about a bit of javascript form to give the users a preferred
setting (same window or new). Default to same window. Could even save the
choice as a cookie?
I dunno about new windows- it's a pain when it's inflicted on you and
abused, and you can always right-click, but it might be nice to have the
choice.
I think it's alright if the main focus of the site is something other than
links - if you're at site and there are occasional references in the text to
other urls, offsite, then it's okay. You don't really want to lose the main
body of what you're reading. www.guardian.co.uk is a good example of this.
But if yahoo did it by default it would be a pain.

The only time I like a new window opened is when the site uses several
windows as it's layout. When I click a link it brings up a full page
site in a dinky little menu window, then I have to right click for
a new window anyhow.

I don't believe so (illegal) - as for whether it's acceptable, I think as
long as you don't try and hide what you're doing and as long as you offer a
button to break out of frames, I think it's acceptable.

Only if you don't offer an alternative - it's got to the stage when you can
almost assume that a user's browser supports frames.

Sometimes it's not so much a case of "Back" as "Flip". Used appropriately,
anything is acceptable.

You can't generally bookmark frame content, only framesets, and
navigation within frames is a joke. Therefore, Frames Still Suck(TM). Next!

That begs the question of what constitutes appropriate use, though.
IMNSHO, the setup described would never be appropriate.
If the issue is really one of "flipping", it would make far more sense
in most cases simply to open a separate window. Fetching files from a
cache is fast, but repainting a window is much, much faster.

Maybe IFRAME could do okay? I'm not experienced in it's use though so a
tutorial on it is at:
http://www.hut.fi/u/jkorpela/html/iframe.html
On a somewhat related note, someone sent me a screen capture of what AOL had
caused to show up in his older AOL software web browser (sorry, I forgot to ask
which MSIE he has).
It was multiple banners, seemingly one for each html frame page. After I had
set up to have all web pages accessible through AOL Hometown, something AOL has
to make it more of a community in case you don't know, this happened. Not seen
wrong in MSIE 5.5 though, works fine.
AOL isn't all bad I believe. One standard banner atop each web page and no
popup or other inclusions, and it gets me a total of 82 megs of space. I'm
very accustomed to paying for this stuff :-) Just been a long wait for more
space and improvements in their software, which I honestly have to say might
never be on par with what people want.
I only use FRAMES with the two "gallery" pages I have and there is a NO
FRAMES version.

I think he was referring to the new window happening when the user
clicked on the link, and not the JavaCurse method of opening a new
window when you try to close the old one, or opening a crapload all
at once.

The code is <a href="my_url.htm" target="newpage">
I only use this feature when my link goes to a site I don't own, and

I hadn't realised how much people hate new windows appearing for links. I
rather like it as I don't lose contact with the parent site. however there
is always the back button.
I was intending to do something similar to David Fontaine's virtual gallery.
Given the antipathy to the idea I don't think I'll bother.

I actually prefer link pages that open other sites in new windows.
One solution would be to offer pairs of links, a "Go to page" and a "New
window with page" link. Have the URL text be the "go to page" link, and
a little button following it be the "new window with page" link.
Compact, and it should please everyone...this is what I plan to do when
I get around to rebuilding my site.

What was that last point? "repainting a window is much, much faster"? "Fetching
files from a cache is fast"? I don't know... one deals with graphics while the
other deals with memory... depends on the computer...
I would agree with Tom, that when something is used properly, it's
acceptable!...
Still depends on what you really want, Eficiency? Quality? Complexity? I
dunno... if were talking about efficiency, opening a window is slower than using
this one already open. If we talk about beauty, you can't see the window that is
hidden under this window... if you arrange something so you can see everthing
clearly, frames are perfect for this! Etc!
That was my opinion.

Not a bad idea. Although I usually just right click the link and select

It's extremely annoying that the page does something I don't want it to do.
I don't want it to trash my screen by opening new windows. I have reserved
certain space on the screen for the application and it should confine itself
in there.
If I want to open the new page in a new window, I can do it myself. I don't
need the page itself to do it for me.
There's also a very annoying feeling of self-confidence of the author
of the page when he does this. It's like he was saying "this page is so
good that you really don't want to leave, so I'll just open the new link
in a new window for you so you don't have to bother".
Why should the author of the page decide what I want or don't want to do?
I can decide for myself, thanks.
The worst think about this is that you can't disable this feature (at
least not in Netscape). This is the most irritating thing about it.

Failure to use <target="_blank"> and/or right click to new window causes me
trouble with:
1) Password protected sites like Geocities' HTML editor, where use of the
"back" button gives a "Data missing : post error"
message. I lost my whole first draft of my boids page this way.
2) Just about every site with a frame.
I am appreciative when link pages open OTHER sites in new windows, too.
The following are annoying:
1) Splash pages. How idiotic. Would Yahoo have survived if every time I
went there I saw a 65 kb image which said "You're at Yahoo!" ?
2) Over use of new windows WITHIN one site.

Also annoying is the fact that the back button in a newly opened window
doesn't work, or should I say doesn't take you back to the page that
you came from, having to close the new window breaks the surfing
flow.

Just as a vote, I prefer a new page when you are sending me somewhere
else, when you are just giving me a small bit of info in text (tool tip
like) or when you are giving me an image or diagram as an addendum to your
text. That way I can send it to the back while it loads and continue reading
your text.
There are ways to disable resize and toolbars so that they don't get out
of hand.

Of course, toolbar=0, resizable=0, location=0...

The back button works in new windows in iCab...this is more a common
browser flaw, not a site design issue. I suggest you submit a feature
request to the makers of your favorite browser... :-)

No, don't use javascript unless it's necessary. Lynx can handle frames and
new windows, but it can't handle javas*t.

Hmm, you're right - I was thinking that the javascript could work alongside
standard html, by over-riding the target (which would leave a default for
non-javascript browsers). However, that can't be done. You could still work
around it using no script tags, but it would mean twice as much coding for
each link.

It can be done. For example, the WIFO staff pages
(http://www.wifo.ac.at/staff/) contain HTML like this (slightly edited):
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
function CreatePortraitWindow() {
NewWindow = window.open("", "portrait",
"width=400,height=250,status=yes,scrollbars=no,resize=no,menubar=no")
}
</script>
[...]
<a href="tel_guger.html"
target="portrait"
onclick = "CreatePortraitWindow ()"
>
<img src="../icons/camera.gif" border="0">
</a>
This will open a new window with the specified size and attributes, if
JavaScript is enabled. It will create a new window (via the target
attribute) with default size and attributes if the browser doesn't
support or has disabled JavaScript, but can open new windows. It will
replace the document in the current window if it cannot open new
windows. So this will work for all browsers in a reasonable way.
