Stupid question here...

I'm trying to get a "smoky room" effect with some scattering media and a
Y gradient for the density (ie, the smoke thickens at the top), but I
can't seem to find the right syntax; either I get errors or it has no
effect on the scene. Could someone gimme a hand here?

You might get more help if you post in povray.advanced-users and provide
a short bit of code...
My first idea is that you might not have the media dense enough. If you
don't see any effects, try increasing the density by larger
increments(values larger than 1 are often necessary).
Also try using a planar pattern with a density that increases as it gets
closer to 0. Then scale and translate it so it reaches the ceiling.

Also make sure that your light sources are set to interact with the media.
