That time off before I have to start on the next Rusty animation is
coming in handy...
To facilitate the Subdivision Surface Suite--and because not even the
best shareware modeler for POV-Ray has it--I am writing a triangle mesh
modeler for POV-Ray.
In QuickBasic.
It's about 90% done (I just need to rotate the views, add the ability
to read and write PCM files, and it'll be done).
Regards,
John

The hysterical part is the fact that QuickBasic doesn't support the
mouse as well as many of us would like (ie, at all). Hence everything
is done through the keyboard. Maya, it ain't...
I suppose I will post the .BAS file somewhere...

Which version of QuickBasic are you using ?
I only have QBasic 0.5 on my system at this time which does not support
the many or the advanced features of some of the newer versions of QuickBasic
<whine>.

It's not the programming language but the programmer that makes a
program. As far as I can see from his page and SSS John can do far
better in Quickbasic then most people could in any other language.
Admitted, QuickBasic isn't the latest RAD tool and won't get all the
speed out of your machine but if you're used to POV parsing who cares?
;)
(We'll see how long I can make that stick...)

Well, I have heard a saying that goes something like "A cook is only as
good as his ingredients." I think it applies to programming, too.
Java maybe? It still isn't speedy, but is probably a lot more versatile
and definitely more portable.

Well, I can't really tell, because I don't know of a QuickBasic for Mac.
But he would have to be good in order to create the SSS.

Good point about the POV parsing...

Umm, there is also jam(another blob modeller), MeshWork, and several
others. Just none which fill the particular niche that this one fills.

I'm using QuickBasic 1.1 (released in 1992). As far as I know, even
if you're using GW-Basic you'll be in good shape.

Real programmers, when confronted with nothing but Basic, use that to
write a hex editor, use that editor to write a better hex editor, and
do the rest of their work with that better hex editor. Real programmers
can compile stuff in their heads.

Real programmers write the machine code directly to a disk with a tiny
magnet on the end of a pin.

Well, if that's the case, then they're no long confronted with nothing
but Basic, ne c'est pas?
(As I recall, I used debug to write a couple .COM programs...)

Time off?? You're done???
I made an "emergency backup" version of my animation this weekend. It's
quite buggy, and I hope I have time to complete all my scene fixes before
the deadline! Less than 104 hours to go!

If folks take the time to read the Windows installation (98 at
least, likely all of them) disk they will be directed to a goodies
directory that is not installed with Windows. QBASIC 1.1 is there along
with a few other "useless" things like filecomp and such. After all we
wouldn't want to confuse people with technical things.

I never uninstalled it to begin with. I have had a .bas directory
off of my c: root ever since I started using a computer and that
is where qbasic.exe is stored. In fact the c:\bas directory is
still in my autoexec path statement :)

themselves. :-)

Oh, please, please, please, not Quick Basic. A binary please, please,
please. Maybe even for DOS?!???!!!
I have actaual been toying with the idea of creating a triangle editor
for Pov-ray in C. It is one of, if not the most, need tools for Pov-ray.

The real problem is the lack of mouse support in QuickBasic 1.1, which
means keyboard commands, which makes it very time-consuming to select a
point in order to make a triangle from it; right now the user has to
scroll through the other points in order to select the desired point, and then
find two more in order to define a triangle.
Since uploading the original version, I have added the ability to copy
the marked points. In order to do this I also had to re-write the
point creation subroutine so that the previous hard-wired limit of
1000 was no longer in effect. There was no error-checking in the
first version, so the user adding the 1001st point was in for a rude
lesson in frequent saves...
There are a couple more changes that need to be made. Someday I'll
upload the results.
Regards,
John

If it's possible to make system interrupt calls (int 33) or directly inline
assembler in quickbasic, you could make your own mouse reading routines.
