To: The POV-Ray Community,

It is my very sad duty to share with you a tragedy that has happened
to someone in our community and a member of the POV-Team.

Ron Parker's 9 year old son Phillip was walking across an ice covered
pond near his home Saturday afternoon which subsequently broke under his
weight. It was 45 min. before divers were able to reach him and he died
early Sunday morning as a result of this accident. I have attached an
article from a local news paper that describes the event and the extent
of how this tragedy is affecting Ron and his family.

Because of this accident Ron will most likely be absent from the news
groups for the next week or two. If you would like to discuss this here
you are welcome to though Ron mentioned that he will likely not be reading
the groups for a while. If you would prefer to extend your sympathies to
Ron and his wife Julie personaly, through e-mail, he has informed me that
it would be ok to do so.

If you do send Ron an e-mail please use this e-mail address -
ron### [at] povrayorg

I wish I could say more, or somehow lessen the grief for Ron and his
family, but for once I find myself speechless and would like Ron to
know that our thoughts and our sympathies are with him.

Local News Article:

Boy dies after falling through ice

Grieving mother remembers happier times as she copes with the loss of her
only child.

By Darnell J. Compton of The News@Sentinel

Just last week, Julie Parker took her 9-year-old son, Phillip Parker,
to Wendy's for a kid's meal and a toy "time capsule." Inside was a paper
asking, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

That was when Julie Parker learned her son wanted to be an astronaut.

Today, her only child is gone.

Phillip Parker died Sunday, a day after he fell through the ice of a pond
in a subdivision in northern Allen County. The boy was flown to Parkview
Hospital by Samaritan Helicopter in critical condition -- he had been
underwater at least 45 minutes before he was pulled from the water's bottom,
said conservation officer Steve Gerber.

A witness saw the boy fall through the ice about 3:20 p.m. and called 911
from Lima Road, near Cook Road. The boy's head and an arm rose above the water,
then he disappeared.

Divers found the boy, and looked for others, but found no one, Gerber said,
noting a group of children was playing on the pond earlier in the afternoon.

The ice on the pond was about an inch thick, Gerber said.

Phillip's mother wasn't certain it was her son until she was at Parkview
Hospital and they showed her his clothes.

"I knew exactly what he was wearing that day," she said.

The boy was taken to intensive care before surgery, where his mother saw
him lying there, unconscious. "I told him we loved him, and we were there
for him."

She still expects her son to return home, and knows it will be difficult
to adjust to his absence.

"This sort of thing happens to other people's kids," she said. "It's kind
of quiet around here.

Her son was quick-witted, funny and talkative. If he wasn't out in-line
skating, or with other kids in their Mill Stone subdivision, he was playing
checkers or was at a computer, playing "SimPark," or "Age of Empire,"
challenging simulation games.

The third-grader from Washington Elementary School was the class clown,
she said.

"He had a real witty sense of humor," she said.

She laughs as she remembers him playing with his Legos. His last creation
was a two-tailed elephant robot.

"He had a vivid imagination," she said. "There's not a corner of this house
that doesn't have a piece of him in it. Clothes, toys ... everything reminds
me of him.

"I feel like I am kind of still waiting for him to run around to the front
door. I know that he won't."

This is very saddening, I am in shock. Would not have ever thought this
kind of message post would show up, even though I'm a bit accustomed now to
such bad events.
Hope Ron and his wife will be okay. Not much a person can say, though
you've done well Ken to let us know. No doubt the others here will likewise
feel at a loss.

Thanks for posting the email address Ken. On this occasion, I think I'll send my
sympathies through email. Let's all do our best during this holiday season to keep
Ron and his wife in our thoughts. Call it prayers, call it best wishes, call it the
power of positive thoughts. It's my belief that every little bit helps.

Even if I don't "really know" anyone here because we never really
meet anyone (I think almost everyone is in this case), I have learnt
to appreciate everyone here. You are now, everyone, important in my
live. Each day I come here.
I am deeply affected by this cruel news. My english is too bad
to better define what I am feeling but I am really sad.
All my thoughts go to Ron and his wife. This is too unjust.

Fabian.

It's a sad moment when any human being dies, but when someone so young has a fatal
acident
the grief is magnified. Someone said that this medium is impersonal, but I feel I
know
most of the characters who inhabit this corner of the web. Ron is one I admire for
his
work, which we have all benefited from, but also for his tolerance and humour. I am
sure
that everyone in the group feels the shock that I did and wish there was some way of
lessening the grief for him. There isn't, of course, but perhaps our words showing we
all
want to demonstrate our affection for him might offer a crumb of comfort.

Thanks to Ken for posting the sad news.

This message hurts me. I'm a father of two.

Praying that you, Ron and your wife, will find the vitality to accept
the unacceptable. It's terrible. Deeply sorry but with you if it's OK
for you.

I can't imagine what to say via email. I thought to let time takes it's
course with their immediate family would be best. Almost didn't post any

I was just thinking that Ron might not read these messages when only
posted here. At least that's what I thought Ken said.
It doesn't change the feelings of course. It's good to see this thread
grow, it seems to give of a lot of warmth in a way.

Like most people here, I am at a loss of words. Such a thing is so far beyond
anything in my experience that I can't even imagine what it must be like. I
almost feel guilty going on with my life because I know that such a quick healing
is impossible for you. Still, I wish to express my deepest sympathies for you and
your wife for what you must be going through, and for Phillip, who never saw what
he could become. If there was anything I could do to help, I would do it without
hesitation, but I don't believe that in a situation like this there is much that
anyone can do.

When you get older chances are that you have experienced tragedies like
Ron's.
All I know is that the world litterally seems changed completely then, and
only very gradually it returns to what it looked like before. I feel deeply
moved by this terrible accident and I hope that in time the world will
change back for Ron and his wife.
I can't think of what to say to Ron personally as a consolation.

One of my sisters past away a little over a year ago now and there's that
feeling of loss always, and yet the sense of being really lost myself was
only for the duration of the event.
It would be more terrible to not come back from it ones own self I believe
judging by that alone.
Which is the reason why I think Ron might not be undazed enough for a
considerable time. Just doesn't seem right to talk about it until it can be
talked about or set aside by him.
Of course we don't want to let he and his wife get the impression they don't
matter either. Think everyone understands that so whatever messages he does
get will hopefully be of help and not a nuisance. I'm just no good with
such things I've always found (or thought so).

Ron himself said that some people would obviously feel more comfortable
about offering their support privately through email rather than in a
public forum like this. Having anticipated this he provided a contact
email address for this reason. I do not know if he will ever read this
thread but if he does I hope he finds the support he is receiving here
as surprising as I have. You people are some of the nicest, most polite,
and friendly bunch of people I have ever had the privilege of associating
with, and I want you all to know how much I appreciate this.

The more I waded through these posts, the more choked up I got.

My wife is expecting our first, and I imagine that our son will be a very
rambunxious, adventuresome boy, sort of like an Amerasian "Calvin". I cannot help
but imagine with dread all the places in my town which might pose dangers to my
little boy. It makes you realize how fragile and precious life is.

Ron, you have our deepest sympathies.

As a regular reader of this group and as someone
who has looked up to Ron as a mentor, I am deeply
saddened by this news.

Thinking of the whimsy and playfulness of Ron's
"Here we go a-borrowing" image I can only imagine that
Ron was a excellent father and Phillip a wonderful child.

I also know that both his parents were blessed by his life,
tragically short as it was.

I am sorry if this is too personal as I have never even
posted before but, to be honest I was shocked how greatly
this news affected me.
I would also like to thank everyone here for their kind words.

My most heartfelt thoughts go out to Ron and Julie.

Julie, Ron,

My deepest sympathies.

In my life I've seen many people go away forever. Some by diseases (much
too young), some by tragic accidents, few who quit their life and some
just because time went out.
But all they had in common that they left the ones who love them behind.
And for them the death of a beloved seems senseless. Why now? Why
he/she?
It's my belief that helped me in such situations. I believe in Jesus and
so I believe that Phillip's death is not the end. My prayers go out to
him...

I am deeply touched by this sad moment for the Parker's as well as for
the emotions displayed here in the group. This is indeed sad to discover
now. I am sorry for bringing back wounds here, but I feel that I need to
acknowledge theese news and my own reactions to them.

I have been away from this group for a long time, and many of you might
not know me or remember me. Ron was here before I joined, and was here
when I left. he was one of the strongest pillars in this community and
gained my respect during the time I was here. To find him missing now is
a loss in itself, and the events behind it is even more saddening.

To have theese tragic happenings to ones beloved does deep damage to
both life and mind, and I can only hope that Ron and Julie as well as
the past on Phillip will manage to find peace within.

Blessings of Light and darkness unto thee, may you find peace all.
