Today (18 Aug 99) is the fifth birthday of povray.org. The domain was officially
registered on 18 Aug 1994 to provide us a better home on the internet. It doesn't
seem half a decade ago to me, but there you have it ... ;)

Luckily, in english, we can keep it neutral, so I say POV-Ray is an it.
(Desafortunadamente, en español, no se puede hacer eso, así que tengo que decir que
POV-Ray es un él.)

I don't know if computers have a functional gender... possible female, but in English
nouns have no formal gender, but an implied gender. Any dog on the street is generally
a 'he' and and cat is generally 'she', etc.

BTW, when is the birthday of pov-ray?

Is there any site which tells the story of pov-ray?

Había un documento en twysted.net que contaba la historia desde el comienzo hasta
justo
cuando empezaban los rumores de 3.1.

De nada. Pero, para algo escribí el mensaje en pasado. Sé que -había- un documento

How can you ask such a thing? Consider:

You devote massive amounts of time to her, and spend all your money
on computer upgrades for her. If you make a mistake, she will not
fail to inform you of it; Often you have no idea why she complains
about the things you do for her, but arguing with her about it will
do no good whatsoever. Frequently the code you put in her must be
put in several times before she is satisfied. And if you put up
with all that, be patient, and make a committment, eventually
she will bear you many beautiful images...

Happy birthday, povray.org!

Hi, Alberto. Try Dan Farmer's, "A Bit of History and a Lot of Name

Hi, Steve. If Albert had asked in Spanish for a brief history of POV-Ray I
wouldn't have been able to direct him to the page's .url.

There's no standing rule that says that anyone *must* speak English-only
but news.povray.org is primarily frequented by English-speaking persons.
Posting messages in English will likely result in more than a few responses
to questions concerning POV-Ray. This isn't a policy of exclusion - rather,
if all parties speak English, why not post in English so others may
participate?

If, on the other hand, a person speaks only Spanish and I could speak the
language I would try to post my reply to a Spanish-language post in both
Spanish and English, and attempt to translate the context of the question
for the benefit of others. Unfortunately, I cannot understand Spanish :(

I just flew off the handel a bit. It was Nieminen's tone that
got me a bit, I like to think of these NGs as being a safe place
to go where diversity is either enjoyed or ignored, not like the
physical world where diversity tends to be stamped on all too
often both today and in the history of so many states including
England.

I'll shut up now and go and try to make my www Micros~1
compatible.

Well, actually I was thinking about a full history of POV-Ray.

BTW Anthony was telling me that there was a document in twysted.net
about the history of POV-Ray. I misunderstood him and he made his point
clear.

Steve wrote:

Thanks Steve. This time uncle Tyler didn't say anything. ??

I think that somewhere in www.povray.org there should be some pages
dedicated to the history of POV-Ray. After all (I'm afraid I can't count
anymore after reading the thread about the new millennium) povray will
be 10 years old in one year and sometime more.

For example:

"The mac implementation of version 3.1g suddenly went into history
because a little uncommented line. As posted by Chris Huff in July 31

> ... Macintosh source code has a line that was accidentally left
> uncommented. If this line is commented and POV is recompiled, the

> The line is in PovMacInit.h, line 71

But the POV-Ray team took action immediately and..."

Well, I was thinking aloud.

I also suggest the creation of a museum. The galleries could be named
after the distinct POV-Ray versions and could hold representative scenes
done with the version in question.

      Alberto.

No need to go that far, Steve. Warp (Nieminen Mika) is very good at
getting his point across in short fashion. I was following this thread and
was trying to think of a way to basically say the same thing without
ruffling anyone's feathers. Warp beat me to it.

Hope you didn't take offense at my post. I tend to be long-winded in some
posts. This is generally a good sign that I feel the intended recipient is a
reasonable sort, otherwise I wouldn't expend the time to compose a message
:)

  Back to the thread topic...

I suppose that the IRTC can be considered as such. As POV-Ray gains new
features, the art submitted to the IRTC will tend to show off these
features, depending upon the topic of the contest. Of course, this is not
broken down by POV-Ray version, only by the chronological date of each
contest topic.

Tak :)

I think I'll just ask my neighbour for help.

I was in Poland back in 1991. I liked it, esp. having in mind what
Bulgaria looked like at the time. I saw many things I hadn't seen
before and it doesn't really take a lot to fascinate an 11-year-old
kid. I went to Gdansk and you'd be right in guessing I couldn't resist
the prices and quality of amber there, so my mother is still wearing
an bracelet, says it helps her blood pressure somehow (?!).

OK, enough OT rambling on my side, I just felt like I had to share :)

Yes, but this is only one aspect that should be covered. I was also thinking in
the history of POV-Ray more in the human point of view. People involved in the
development of distinct aspects of POV-Ray, telling stories about their mood
when they were working the details. Stories about the discussion of the
implementation of new features, the development of the syntax, etc. This could
be done in the form of articles and interviews. I'm aware that this suggestions
will demand a lot of work but I think many users and non-users will enjoy it.

I agree because until now most of the scenes submitted to the IRTC were
rendered with POV-Ray. But this may change in the future.

Such a document would be quite interesting to read. Does the material
still exist? Is anyone willing to compile all the material into one

I'm willing to bet that Chris Young has or knows the majority of this
information though whether or not he would be interested in such a project
is another story altogether.

Yes, Gdansk seemed fine to me too. But I've always been living
in Warsaw.

Ok.

The human side... yeah, it was and is interesting, much of the time. Much
of the discussion is similar to what you might read from the posts in the
povray.programming or povray.unofficial.patches groups. Things like
portability issues might be brought up. Other times, a POV-Team member will
share an interesting e-mail with the others, or direct us to check out a
really novel use for POV-Ray.

I vaguely recall some discussions that took place when Dieter Bayer began
to implement his vista and light buffers from his FTPOV (FasterThanPOV-Ray)
unofficial patch into the official POV-Ray after he joined the Team.

Many of the POV-Team members have made an effort to meet up with some of
the others at events such as SIGGRAPH over the years. There used to be a
JPEG or .gif posted in the CompuServe file libraries of (I think) Dan
Farmer, Lutz Kretzschmar, (hey, Xander, were you in that one?) and some
other early Team members but I no longer have the image :( I do remember one
instance a few years ago on CompuServe when things somehow took a silly turn
and one of the members got us started on that word game (anagrams?) that
took the letters that form "Persistence of Vision" and used them to spell
other words and phrases. It proceeded to go from amusing to extremely
outrageous (not suitable for viewing by children or those offended by the
mention of body parts!). It was quite hilarious and I wish I had saved those
posts before my old machines died.

Not sure if someone has archived those old revision text files but if they
still exist on someone's machine it wouldn't take much to put it all
together, I would think.

The 'human side' of the POV-Ray development would be a ton of work. It'd
be almost like editing a book, since much of the material would have to be
garnered from hundreds of posted public and private forum messages from the
old CompuServe GRAPHDEV and POVRAY Forums, as well as some private e-mails.
I'm not sure if anyone has archived all of those old posts or how far back
they would date if someone did have 'em. I mean, Drew Wells was long gone
well before I got a CompuServe account and others like Truman Brown were
starting to move on. I would sure like to read this myself but obviously
there is little commercial value to a project such as this, but quite a bit
of work involved.

I remember holding my newborn son (the first one) while debugging
POV-Ray code. This was often at odd hours of the night - probably
explains why the Bezier code looks like it does...

David Buck and I had several long discussions on what later became
filter & transmit. On my 286 (actually a Harris clone of the 286 with
an IIT clone of the 287 chip) there was a big performance win by adding
a separate keyword and accumulating the transparency independently of
the various calculations that go into the normal (refracted)
transmission. There were still just 3 components to a color then. [And
the big feature everyone wanted was the torus...]

Also had several discussions with DKB about how bounding ought to work.
I wanted the bounding shapes to chop pieces off when they were outside.
He didn't want that to happen (and in fact really wanted clipping to be
done with CSG difference of transparent objects). Since the performance
of CSG with invisible surfaces was a big problem, the compromise we came
to was to add clipping (well, to change my modified bounding code to use
the keyword clipped_by).

Yup - met up with Lutz+Markus (both of them), Thomas Baier, and Jeff
Bowermaster (Dave Mason too, but I see him all the time).

Very interesting background stories, Xander. Thanks for sharing that with
us. I'll have to save this post as a 'keeper' <s>.

I thought the same thing. I seldom read about the historical aspects
of POV-Ray and people.

I really enjoyed reading your posts (Alan and Alexander).

Wish there were more people willing to share their stories.

By the way, I found in the Mac documentation a short history about POV-Ray
based on upgrades (it goes back to DKB Trace). The history is focused on the
mac implementation with some comments about the people involved.

Regards, Alberto.
