The post is that there are exactly three who who object. The
rest appear to be polite or have the technical ablility which you
lack to implement a filter.

	FILTER ME PLEASE!

I do not want you to read what bothers you.

If you are having a problem with the filter, I will dig up the

You "told me" to stop doing something because your primative
software could not deal with it. You did not ask. You did not
describe, you did not discuss. Your arrogant keystrokes told me
what to do.

Now your buddies are threatening spam-bait. Get your act

discuss it? Retaliation is heaven.

Message: <37b19d0d@news.povray.org>
I posted this in another thread so please excuse the cross-posting but this
thread here is where it really should go:

Ok guys,

Now that you have fought for a while (and provided me with some amusing
reading) I would like to comment on your war of words.

I am probably one of those hated outsiders because I am using Outlook
Express as a newsreader. I admit to occasional use of Netscape's newsreader
(now in version 4.61). Perhaps that alone disqualifies me from partaking in
this thread but I take my chances.

I also noticed that a few posters use VCards. They show up as a little icon
identifying them immediately as a VCard. So unless I want to get additional
info about the guy who posted I simply ignore them. Actually, my newsreaders
are smart enough to identify the type of attachment.

As far as sigs are concerned I usually ignore them too. Some are really
funny but after a while ... well, let's skip that. Oh, the ones that are
supposed to resemble something and use all those funny characters are the
worst because unless you use a typewriter font they appear just like
garbage.

One thing that struck me while following the discussion (which, btw, is
really way off topic) is that some of you use a newsreader from the old
times, i.e. when the net was used only by students and other members of the
mental elite. Yet, all of you cannot wait until a new version of PoV-Ray
comes out. That IMHO is schizophrenic.

I think if you want to use your newsreader of choice and it cannot process
certain data in a way you like you either have to accept that or do
something about your application. The net is a place where people can meet
without prejudice or bias, irrespective of sex, color, belief or OS and
newsreader for that matter. And whatnot.

BTW, I am annoyed by the fact that people post huge files w/o letting me
know how large they are. So I only find out after the fact that it takes
ages to download over a phone line. Obviously, the posters have fast
Internet access or are a lot more patient than I am. Yet, I do not flame
them or ask them to not post or use a smaller resolution for their images or
do this and do that. They have a choice of medium and so do I.

Take care, guys. This newsgroup would not be what it is without you and your
contributions!

I don't understand this. I use the most modern newsreader I could find,
one that has features Netscape, Microsoft, and even Forte haven't bothered
to provide in their primitive newsreaders, and yet people still insist that
it is obsolete. Let the GUI brainwashing commence, I guess.

Perhaps we should ask the POV-Team to stop wasting time on that MS-DOS
port, and the Unix povray and s-povray versions. After all, if it doesn't
have windows and a mouse, it's primitive. And I guess that Macintosh port
isn't very useful, either. I mean, after all, some huge percentage of
people use Windows, so it must be better. And if they can't use our BMP
files and Moray scenes, that's their problem. They should clearly upgrade
their computers.

Feh!

For the record, I modified my killfile to only kill Matt in this thread,
because he does have some useful things to say when he's being rational.
I hope to have a vcard filter written for slrn in a day or two, so then
I'll be able to again read his posts without screaming. Users of other
open-source newsreader software who know C (that means you, Warp :) ),
I urge you to take up the gauntlet: add a vcard filter to your newsreader,
then submit it back to your newsreader's maintainer. Make the world a
better place for everyone, and let the Netscape users rot in their own
private vcard-inundated hell.

I think I know the one real and the dozen imaginary meanings of
spam. You appear to be in the imaginary zone.

In my time I have told folks with their HTML on that fine but
turn it off because they are not using it. Defaults are fun but
... Use it, fine. No problem.

The HTML encapsulation of elementary information is not a bad
idea. Now you can object to all the extra vcards but they are not
duplicated where sigs are with every post. If I post a million
messages, you get a million sigs and only vcard. And I know that
is dependent on cluster size and packet size and all the rest. It
might be a totally dumb idea.

From my point of view. I started posting in these newsgroups
about seven months ago.

I started the vcard about that time. I can explain if you know
Windows but otherwise don't ask.

Then after posting in almost every group for all that time,
including this one, I get a nastygram from one person in general.
He starts a flame war. A statement that "we don't do that here"
would have been fine and treated accordingly. Who the hell is we?

	Remember "including this one."

And I do not give a rat's ass who reads what I poat or not. He
who has eyes, let him read. He who doea not read, EF off.

From what most of my readers say there is a greater cost in
following my convoluted syntax than ignoring lines that are
obviously to be ignored can possibly compare to.

Is that a good enough example?

Hey Matt,

First, let me say that I'm not about to tell you what you should do or should not
do. I'm also not about to tell you that your own choices are right or wrong. I
don't have the right or the privilege. There's a lot of heat flying around on this
topic and I am not inclined to add to it. Instead, I thought I'd just share my
point of view as to how I do things, without placing judgment on anyone else.

For me, I view these newsgroups as a resource. Typically, I post to them to ask
questions, answer questions, get opinions or offer opinions. When I'm posting
messages, one of the primary considerations I have is whether or not everyone will
be able to read my messages. There have been times when I have been tempted to add
in colored text, bold or italicized text, etc. But I always resist the temptation.
Doing otherwise may preclude the ability of some readers to understand what I am
saying. That, in my mind, would end up defeating the purpose of my posting
something in the first place. It could also end up precluding my getting the
answers I need.

Anyhow. That's how I do things. :{) Hope I haven't wasted more than a moment or two
of your time. But if I have, feel free to filter me out in the future. <grin>

David

The official stance of the owners of this server are as follows though
unrelated material was removed to maintain brevity. You may read the full
context of the server posting policy in the announcement group here on this
server...

-------------

Put simply, a binary is any file that is not a plain text file. For our
newsgroup purposes, the following are examples of binary files:

- JPEGs, or other graphic file formats,

- HTML-encoded text (many people who follow our newsgroups use
newsreaders that cannot automatically read HTML posts without
launching an external Web browser. Please post plain text messages or,
at least a combination of plain text and HTML),

- any executable file,

- any other file that is sent as an attachment to a posted message, even
if it is readable text. This includes POV-Ray scene (.pov) files
    sent as message attachments.

----------

I would have to say that you Vcard falls into these categories by virtue of
the fact that it is an attachment. Please act responsibly and do yourself a
favour and take the time to read the server access policy in it's entirety.

I am now the proud owner of a vcard-free slrn. It was a three-line change
in the routine that reads articles (it uses strstr to check the current line
for the string "text/x-vcard". If found, it stops reading.) Your mileage
probably will vary, of course. And now I'm going to remove Matt from my
score file, since I found such a nice solution.

I will await the opinion of the newsgroup owners in reguards to
the subject of a Netscape utility.

Pardon if I do not take you as authortitative.

Next I am going to be told that only the Linux version of POV is
valid.

As to the access policy, after seven months of posting you are
the first to find a problem with the access policy including the
owners.

Would you find the time to post the violation of the policy the
owners have not and to get their concurrence in that violation?

	Thank you.

Don't take him as authoritative. Take Alan Kong as authoritative, since Ken
was just quoting a post from povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions:

From: Alan Kong <ako### [at] pacbellNO-SPAMnet>
Newsgroups: povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions
Subject: Where can I post my binary or text file?
Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 17:06:34 GMT

Xref: news.povray.org povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions:23

That "X-Authenticated-User: teamacct" header means Alan is a member of the
POV-Team. That doesn't necessarily mean he is speaking for the POV-Team
(For example, I've never spoken for the POV-Team and I have no plans to
start doing so anytime soon, particularly not regarding news server matters)
but combined with the fact that it was posted in that newsgroup, it's a
pretty good bet he was.

I'm a comunist (not the sory you read about in the papers), and
I've got a new newsreader. But because those Vcards are so
annoying I'm starting to filter people out if they use them.
This isn't a step that I take lightly but it's got to be done.

I don't have the power to update the phone lines.

I agree about sigs being humerous and informal or interesting.

As was said of Mr. Spock, your saving grace is being rude. I am
rude also and without apology. I wish it had not started either
and particularly over the vcard thing. It really is a nice
gimmick if you look at it.

We are now friends, right? Hops that is true. All forgotten and
forgiven is not in question. This is the internet.

I think I am better than most at returning what I get in terms
of insults. But I hope they result in shaking hands as we have
just done.

Which is now all forgotten if mutual.

There is no emnity between us. I have been in public debate
since 1980. I can give better than I get but nothing personal.

So shake on it, friend :)

I have no problem at all and no memory of the past.

In my 19 years in public discussion I have had enemies turn to
friends but never a friend turn to an enemy. I have increased in
friends all over the world. I am happy to have you as one of
them. Will you accept me as a friend?

You asked for the source of server access and posting policy. I provided you
with exactly the information you requested. You may do with that information
as you and you alone see fit. I do not claim authority over you or anyone
else nor do I accept that responsibility in any regard. Please don't shoot
me I am only the messenger.

Now let me add that I have been visiting these newsgroups for a long time now
and this has to be the rudest most profanity ridden thread in the history of
this group. I have read nearly every message ever posted on this server and
I can say that there has been more profanity used in this thread than in all
of the messages ever posted on this server. Almost the entire contents of
this thread are so blatantly off topic and strictly out of line it deserves
the award for the rudest thread of the year award. I am ashamed of how quickly
this turned into a name calling, muscle flexing brawl, and I really wish it
would end here and now.

Shame on all of you for letting it get so out of hand !

I'm now going to go find someone to help so leave me out of this.

	Please do so. Please filter.

It is better to filter for yourself than demand everyone "self
filter" what you do not want to see and then make a public issue
of what you do not want to see in public.

You realizse that now that it is over and there is a three line
patch to kill vcards it really was much ado over nothing.

And I should care if you filter me?

If I wnated an ego boost, it was all the people making a fuss
and not filtering me.

And that is a responsibility I will not accept.

I am just my arrogant posting self.

ACTUALLY, it's a [350][34][6] problem.

350 time frames, 34 actors, 3 velocity coordinates, 3 position coordinates.

Already burned out mentally from work and not sure I want to try this one
tonight...

Or, to put it another way: "I'll continue to be a jackass, whether
anyone likes it or not, until someone forces me to stop."

Ooo, scary. Look, I'm SHAKING. Since I won't be sending the spam, you
can't do a damn thing about it, and neither can my ISP.. not unless they
want to get sued.

When all those pornsite spambots and internet travel agents and
gods-know-what-else come knocking on your emailbox - all through no
fault of my own, of course, since after all I don't actually KNOW any
spammers, only where to get their attention - just remember:

> "Filter" is the power of any user.

and this:

> Your choice is to filter or not to filter.

Isn't it ironic how you insist on forcing the rest of us to filter your
posts or read them as-is, essentially taking an "opt-out" position, and
yet when you're faced with the same exact prospect, you start tossing
around threats and insults? :P

There is an alternative, of course.. you could simply stop being a
jackass without having to have some kind of admin yell at you, and
convert your stupid VCard to a sig, or omit it. Then there would no
longer be any need for us to use spam as a bludgeoning instrument.

I see that you have done this. Thank you.

Yes, please do. How do you filter out newsgroup messages from a specified
individual using Microsoft Outlook Express?

Thanks in advance

I don't appear to have a "Message Rules" option in the "tools" menu. Might
this be because I'm using Outlook Express instead of Outlook?

I'm sorry. I think it has to do with the version. I'm using Outlook
Express 5. I do not remember exactly where the former version had it, but I
am sure I used it. I think is even less complicated. Explore Options and
actions, or help. I am sure it is there. Good luck.

This looks familiar... Although it doesn't work perfectly.

(Btw, I don't know if I like other people using the exact same type of
signature as I do since it's a very personal signature)

It worked just fine when I compiled and ran it. How is it not working
perfectly?

If you object to my using this signature, I am willing to stop doing so.

Perhaps I'm a little bit pedantic. However, I think that the people here
are already accustomed to see my signature and recognize it easyly because
it's quite distinctive. I also made a lot of work for that signature.
It's like I made a povray picture and then somebody uses that exact same
picture with a a couple of retouches in his page.

I figured that one out. It's because of the line getting wrapped and the
whitespace being included inside the quotes. Change it to one line and it
works right.

OK, I'll figure out a new signature.
