Hello,

As a result of a different discussion, I used Google Trends to track
searches for Pov since 2004.

What I found is sad, but I think I found a ray of hope (d'oh..pun).

Since 2004, searches for (pov ray and pov-ray) have practically dropped
orders of magnitude:
https://www.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=pov-ray,pov%20ray

Searches for (povray) are worse:
https://www.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=pov-ray,pov%20ray,povray

Here is povray vs blender and sketch up:
https://www.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=pov-ray,blender%203d,pov%20ray,sketchup

I found that the interest in Pov seems highly localized, whereas blender
and sketchup are more widely spread.

What is this hope of which I speak?

Well, SketchUp is apparently MADLY popular, and there is a plugin called
SU2POV which allows interop.

I didn't even know it existed until I specifically searched for a Sketchup
plugin for Pov...so I think if that plugin could be improved, and sketchup
users here and elsewhere did a bit of old-school mid 90's software
evangelism...Pov might just get a good influx of new blood.

This would need to be done most especially by those speaking other
languages, due to the highly localized interest in Pov vs sketchup.

Does anyone else have thoughts about this? Strategies?

Ian

I tried to look into SU2POV once but the code is not released.

I will see if there are any open alternatives over the next few days as
time allows. If I find one I will post it here, maybe some of us with time
will be able to contribute.

Whatever happens nothing will improve without old-school hard core
grassroots software advocacy, like the 90s Netscape vs IE or Mac vs PC
style techniques, less the flames and douchebaggery of course. ;-D

True. I suppose folks can keep running searches for "POVRAY + ....", post
renders in various forums, ask "was that made with POVRAY?" and post ways to do
x, y, or z by using ... POVRAY.

Show what it's good for, help others use it, make it easier to use, and help
smooth out the learning curve for new users.

Make a point about what POV-Ray can do that other graphics packages CAN'T do.

My opinion: Community Povray users are not interested in the popularity of
Povray.
I and Mr tried to talk about their work - is not willing to learn something.
Unfortunately, I am not an 2d/3d-artist, I'm a programmer working in the narrow
direction. I did everything that I can.
It remains useless, but it was a big step towards the popularity of Povray.
In the plans of developers as the popularity of the Povray can not be traced.

Plastering works by Gilles Tran and the other Elder/Outer Gods of PovRay
(obviously Im a fan of HP Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith) in forums with
links to povray.org and the artist sites cannot hurt either.

Many folks here have done some really incredible work over the years,
everything from mathematical visualization to architecture and nature.

It is too bad we don't have their scenes to include in the samples coming
with Pov...

I understand the position but if we don't actively care and do something
the community will continue to shrink, and then for what justification will
the developers continue their work? How will we attract new developers when
the original ones retire their grand effort?

There are many ways to effect change. Simply creating and posting beautiful
works which can be picked up by search engines and linked to Pov is one.

The trick is to get the engines to find them and then get people to realize
the work came from pov. Perhaps a small watermark in a corner would work,
since even in image searches people will see it came from Pov.

povray.org is looking very dated... Personally I think it gives the
impression of some very old piece of software that hasn't been updated
for decades. Which is a shame because we know that's not the case.

A lot of exclusive and beautiful work done by users Povray.
Many of the works are unique, but are created using text editors.
People used their own software solutions.
Now very few who want to use a text editor to create 3d-scenes.
Fate Povray in the hands of existing developers. Without them, it is difficult
to change something.
I have seen the future Povray: animation with textures, caustics, blob, CSG,
DF3, cloth, rigid and soft body.
But I have a little knowledge to understand the source code.
I could not write a single patch to speed up the exchange of data between the
Blender-3d and Povray.
I have to wait more experienced programmers who like my idea. :)
