'Photon mapping is a technique which uses a backwards ray-tracing
pre-processing step' -- doesn't this mean a forwards light-path
tracing? A new user would not be aware that standard raytracing
traces the light path backwards from object to light source, and
that what you mean here is that you are tracing 'backwards' with
respect to this 'normal' path .. ie forwards with respect to how
the standard physical model of light works.
