I'm not sure if that's a good idea, df3 is only used in a pattern
(density_file), but image types are used in heightfields, image_map,
bump_map, material_map, image_pattern and heightfield.

I have suggested this as well. A note and a link to 6.7.11.16 in both
of those sections would help a lot finding that feature.
I don't understand how they succeeded in hiding that feature so well... :)

It isn't really a "function thingy", it just uses them, and it doesn't
have anything to do with height fields, it is just an image type. Look
for a list of the image types...

Christoph,

do you mean, don't put the df3 in such a section, or do you mean don't do
it all?

I meant to leave out df3. Otherwise it seems a pretty good idea
(especially if it includes a few hints for the newbies about which image
formats should be preferred for which purpose).

- Input formats:
description of all types of input that POV-Ray can deal with,
except *.pov, *.inc and *.ini files.
   - Image formats:
       - TGA
       - SYS
       - PNG
       - ...
       - Notes on use
   - Internal formats:
       - function
   - Density formats:
       - DF3
(- DF/DFD if it will make it into an official)
   (- Font formats ?)
   ( ... )

This kind of like the setup I was thinking of, but I havn't finished
these thoughts. "Internal formats" could be indented one more level and
be part of Image formats. Font files could be part of it, or not. Where
in the whole structure of the SDL section does it fit best? etc.

It will.

How about the radiosity and photons file formats. They are probably used
much less than image files but documentation would be even more important
since they are specific to POV-Ray so documentation can't be found
elsewhere.

Their format is subject to change without notice, so what could be said
about them?

Just because the format could be changed does not make a description
obsolete. In fact i doubt either of these formats will change
significantly (meaning making a description totally worthless) soon. Both
file formats are strongly bound to the way the data is handled internally
so describing the formats could help understanding how these functions
work too. Apart from that I have several photons and radiosity files that
took longer to calculate than a lot of image files so i would not be
pleased if POV-Ray would neglect how to read them very soon...
