After a new installation of POV-Ray, I wanted to do some test renders. But I
was shocked to see, that all my scenes and sub-directories inside my scene
folder - are gone!
All I see there now is a little text file with the following text: "The
scene files can now be found in your Documents directory under 'POV-Ray'.".
I of course went to that folder, but couldn't see anything there. Just the
new installation of POV-Ray was there (why, anyhow, did it install into my
DOCUMENTS, and not into MY PROGRAMS?). The Scenes folder there, by the way,
contained the same funny file with the same funny text. But nothing else.
My question is now: where are all my hundreds of scene files, which I have
developed since the last nearly 15 years? Where are all my include files?
What happened with all my complex spaceship files I did in POV-Ray? And
where are all the scene files I am contracted to work for many clients? Dear
POV-Ray team, please let me know where they are. Please give me the
location. I need them, I have work to do. These files reflect the last
fifteen years of my life and work with POV-Ray. Please assist me. Please
help me finding them. Please.
Please help me in not turning into insanity. Please. Please.

Please ignore this thread - the files were found, all at the right location.
I searched the wrong directory (installation directory, not My Documents).
The fault is purely and solely on my side.
But please change the following unusual behavior: the POV-Ray binaries
should be installed into the My Programs folder, not into the Application
Data folder inside the Documents and Settings folder.
However, thanks for reading.

Maybe next time you will also learn to create backups?

Please read what the installer tells you. Then you would know what _you_
told it to do so - install without administrator privileges, which prevents
access to the install location would want it to be in.

I'm glad to read that you found the files. What a terrifying thought, though, to
lose so much work! What a DOOMSDAY scenario!! Your example has scared me into
doing backups on a *much* more regular basis--something I tend to neglect and
forget about.

But it's a rather obscure and user-unfriendly way of saying what
it will actually do, and the logic behind it requires to know about
Vistas access control mechanisms, which shouldn't be expected from
someone installing it on XP or earlier.

Why was your *data* in Program Files?
POV-Ray/scenes is supposed to have the *sample* scene files.

Because since older days, the POV-Ray versions stored the SCENES folder
within the POV-Ray program folder.
But here's now the bad news: I truly lost some important files. Multiple
times I installed the new betas, and somehow I had then two scene folders. I
tried to catch up with this irritating MY DOCUMENTS location, and might have
deleted files which were only in one of the two locations. So, I really lost
a lot! I just recognize that now...
Request: I sent my complete scene files and graphics about the SPACE CARRIER
SENECA to various people here. Is here anyone who still has those files? I
need them back, so urgently. Thanks.

If you simply deleted them, they might still be in your recycle bin.
