I'm not sure if this is a bug or not. I'm trying to install Povray for
windows 3.1 onto a Lab computer at my school. They have Windows NT
installed, i'm guessing version 4.0. Everytime i try to install it it says
"Corrupt Installation Detected," first thing before it does anything else,
then exits. I've tried getting the files from different sources, web and
ftp, and whole and in parts, but they all do the same. Someone else had the
same problem, but solved it by running winpov.exe from the C: directory. My
directory at school is H: I don't have any access to the C: drive. Could
this be the problem? Thank you for any help. Again, if this isn't really a
bug, just something I'm doing wrong, then I apologize for posting to the
bugreports newgroup.

You are "guessing"???

NT 4.0 looks like W95, NT 3.51 looks like old Windows 3.1. Which one is it?
Does POV run on NT 3.51?

Johannes.

It is NT4.0 I don't follow NT very much, I though 5.0 was out and I wasn't sure
if maybe they had that version.

5.0 is still beta.
However, I am sorry that I can't help you with your problem. I run POV on NT
4.0 without problems -on *very* different computers: P60 [slooooow!] and
PII300 :-)

Do you know if the school computers have the Service Pack 3 installed?
Have you had success installing other stuff? Maybe your user rights are very
limited (for example access to the registry). That could be a reason for the
installation to fail (if your school doesn't want students to install
stuff). But I am only guessing here...

Johannes.

Also, since you only have access to the H drive (an non-standard drive
letter), it may be a roaming profile, or a unix account being accessed via
Samba. I don't have a lot of details, but I know we use samba at school
here at the University of Washington, and occasionaly encounter problems
with Windows programs which freak out about the unix mapping. Haven't
really found a fix, we just end up having to save temporarily to the C drive
and then copy stuff over when we're done. I guess that won't help you
though. If all else fails, install the dos versoin of pov, that shouldn't
require access to the registry or anything. You could even (if you're
desparate) install at home or on another computer and zip up the
installation and unzip it on your account. All you really need is the
executable. Good luck.

Ken

I tried just using the executable, but the windows version still needs to access
the registry and win.ini, which i don't have access to. I installed the DOS
version and it works fine, but i'd like to use the windows version eventually.
Thanks for your help, though.
