Is there a 3ds max plugin to render in povray? Or a converter that will
convert max files to povray. I am looking for a clean solution. Something
that will work will all parts of MAX.
MAX does not have a good rendering engine built-in.
Thanks

As far as I know, no. MAX is a proprietary 3D graphics format which they
gaurd rather closely. PolyTrans claims to support MAX and can export to
POV-Ray v2.2 and 3.0 but is expensive and will probably require a fair
amount of tweaking to get comparable results.

If you have MAX why not try exporting to .3ds and convert from there?

there was someone working on a max 1.2 plugin that would export and render
in povray...

Some loves it, some hates it. Personally I dislike Max 4 which is the only flavour
I've used. It uses memory appallingly, crashes
frequently and personally I hate the material editor. Generally to me it feels like a
collection of bits loosely connected together
without much thought and is consequently shaky. I hate the renderer and its ray tracer
is rubbish.
But in the end it's down to taste and suitability for the job. I've used all the big
packages at one time or another and they all
have their good and bad bits. Nowdays I use Povray. It's free, yes it's slow and is
script based but if you take even a little time
to learn it, there is nothing that it can't do as well as any of the very expensive
big brothers.
Mick
Thanks.
So what would be the best 3ds to povray converter? Somthing that would keep
the materials in place.
