Greetings,

I just discovered a new free modeller called "3D Canvas" and thought I would
share the news here.

Marketed something like a cross between Strata 3D and Blender, 3D Canvas is
entirely free (not trial ware or shareware) but users are encouraged to
purchase the "Pro" upgrade (US$49) which enables some extra features, the
most notable of which is CSG.

Still even the free version is extremely powerful including the features you
expect out of a commercial modeller. Some of the more notable features are
Nurbs, Inverse Kinematics, Skeletal Animation, B-splines (extrude, lathe,
etc.), deformation tools and a very good attempt at wysiwyg "painting" of
textures directly on surfaces in 3D space.

Most notably is the software's "Real Time Rendering" which uses Microsoft's
Direct3D to provide a shaded "real time" 3D editing enviroment.

And unlike Strata 3D, this software actually exports to POV! (also 3D
Studio (3ds), Truespace Objects (cob), AutoCAD (dxf), DirectX (x) and VRML
1.0 (wrl) files)

Nice software if you need a free modeller. Take a look.

Enjoy.

if you still have dx7 installed I would recommend you stick with that for
now - upgrade only when all your drivers support dx8 (if they need to) and
even then wait till you buy a game that refuses to run without :)

I've heard about some nasty memory leaks in dx8. They fixed it in dx8a.
Before the system won't run more then a few hours without rebooting - OTOH
Windows has to be rebooted every few hours anyway ;-)

No, it doesn't! I must reboot my home PC maybe twice a month, and that
usually because Netscape crashed and left bits and pieces all over the
place.

I have found that using vendor-provided drivers was a lot better than
generic nVidia ones.
