I've thought about asking the POV-Team to add a new group to this server,
perhaps you can tell me what you think, so that I can see if there is
support for my idea.

I would like to see a group devoted to sPatch users. People could chat about
sPatch, post tutorials, tips tricks and even their sPatch project files
(*.spt)

I know that the sPatch project has been abandoned by it's writer, but
perhaps if we could spark enough newfound interest in the program, we could
convince the author to release his source code to another developer.

Let me know what you think, please!
Thanks in advance

Not speaking for the POV-Team here but I think they would be skeptical
about the usefulness of such a group and the need to add it to this server.
The reason I say this is because there are sPatch questions posted here
on occasion but there does not seem to be enough of them to warrant a
dedicated news group for that purpose. General use questions can be
discussed in .general and if you want to share a sPatch file you can post
it in povray.binaries.scene-files without violating any of the charters
of these groups. In fact there have been a couple of sPatch files posted
there in the past.

If enough people do respond positively to your request though we can
ask Alan Kong to address this issue with the POV-Team and get their
feedback on the question.

A better idea would be to ask the POV-Team to officially ask/beg the author
to continue the work or release the source. I think we would get a better
response that way than asking ourselves. Don't you think?

That is a really good idea, now the trick is just getting the POV-Team to
listen to me, perhaps someone who reads this message and knows a member of
the POV-Team could convey our concerns... anyone?

Thanks in advance

If the guy doesn't want to work on the program any longer I don't see how
the POV-Team asking him to get back to work would do any good. The reason he
won't release the source from what I understand is because he is legally unable
to so because part of it comes from another application that he is not the sole
owner of and the there are copyright restrictions preventing him from doing so.

What might be best would be a misc.modelers group, somewhere for other than
the Moray one in order to keep that separate and yet have a place specific
to the topic.

That sounds like a not-so-abd idea, I recieved an email from Mike Clifton
last night, and he expressed a desire to continue work on the project, but
he could not give me anything concrete, he is still interested, time is just
a major factor apparently.

Greetings,

I have talked to the POV-Team on your behalf and have this in reply to
your request for a separate sPatch/3rd party software group on this server.

The basic consensus is that the current structure of the groups is fine
and seems to handle discussions of third party programs without the need
for adding a new group for this purpose. The reason that Moray and POVLAB
each have their own unique group is because the respective authors of those
programs also provide direct customer support in those groups besides the
peer support of their user base. The POV-Team acknowledges the fact that
sPatch is a popular program among POV-Ray users but Mike Clifton does not
visit these groups and has shown no indication that he will offer any
direct support for sPatch in this forum. The same is true for other programs
that support POV-Ray.

With that said the POV-Team has no problems with discussions of 3rd
party software not related to POV-Ray on this server but do not feel
these discussions merit their own dedicated group. It should also be
noted that this server currently supports 27 different dedicated groups.
We would like to keep this number down to a manageable level if at
possible.

Thank you for understanding our decision with regard to this request,
