Looking for a good mesh (triangle mesh) editor for win95/NT. Must be
able to handle 20K triangle sized files. Interested in gap-patching,
re-contouring, breaking into large segments. Triangle density
increase/decrease a major plus. .raw in/.raw out (at least) preferred.
Does this beast exist? Or do I have to roll my own?
Suggestions?

Well, there's rhino, which is actually a nurbs editor, but exports to
triangle meshes. Raw format, pov-ray format, and many others as well. It
allows you to choose the amount of triangles exported.
It's in beta now, so it's free, but once out of beta it will cost $800,
so get it now while it's still free.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm familiar with Rhino (nice package!), but
it's not what I'm looking for. As you pointed out, it's a NURBS editor
that only exports tri.meshes. I already have large tri.meshes that I
want to fix up. I need something that reads tri.meshes (hence the .raw
file input requirement) and allows direct manipluation of points,
individual faces and occasionally groups of faces.

Well there is AutoCad 14 that will allow you to
do everything you ask but import .raw files. Of
cource it is a little expensive if only used as a
mesh utility.
There a little program I purchased at a retai
l software place called 3D design plus.
It retailed in the US for about 30 bucks. It too
will not directly support .raw files but has dxf
import capability.
It will allow you to physicaly modify individual
triangle mesh points. It basicaly is a 3D cad
modeling package. It has its own built in rendering
engine (a pretty good one too for the price), has
a good range of primitives, offers key framing
animamation support, and will export directly
to dxf file formats.
The only limitaion of the program is an
internal limitation of 1000 triangles. Any more
and they are ignored.

AutoCAD 14? Gee, why didn't I think of that <grin>.
.dxf would be AOK too, just used .raw as a lowest common denominator.
CAn transfer between .raw and .dxf without problem.
3D Design almost sounded like what I was looking for, but the 1000
triangle limit eliminates it. Thanks for the suggestion, tho, since I
WAS looking at it (or a similiar package - can't remember exact title)
in the local cheap CD clearance rack at Babbage's. Glad I didn't buy it
just to find THAT limitation.
It sounds like I need to fire up the old compiler and get cracking.
