Shawn Fumo's POV-Ray Utilities List
Release 4 -- May 31, 1997
Part 1 of 3

#############################################################
Introduction
#############################################################

Here is the fourth release of my listing. It includes various
utilties for use with the POV-Ray raytracer. Many of these
utilities output to other formats as well, so you might want
to take a look at this list, even if you do not use POV-Ray.
There are also several utilities which do not directly support
POV-Ray. However, I felt they were worth mentioning, and their
formats can be converted to that of POV-Ray.

You may wonder, from looking at the Table of Contents, what my
definition of a modeller versus an object generator are. I've
struggled with this for a while, and I think what would be good
is this: A modeller manipulates a particular built-in object
(or objects) to your own objectives. A modeller can be graphical,
textbased, or even commandline, but is usually graphical. An
object generator makes a particular object out of other objects.
The focal-point is not to change the base objects, but what you
are making out of them. While many object generators are command-
line or include files, some are very graphical like most modellers
(and are called modellers by the authors). I just use this more
specific definition to help split up things.

While I found some of these utilities on my own, the vast majority
I found because of some great web pages others have put up. Please
see Section 9 for a listing of these sites.

The main place to find that latest copy of this list is the
comp.graphics.rendering.raytracing newsgroup. You can also
find a copy on the WWW at
http://www.the-spa.com/shawn.fumo/povutils/

POV-Ray itself is availible at:
http://www.povray.org/ and
ftp.povray.org (or one of its many mirrors)

One good source of information is the official
comp.graphics.rendering.raytracing FAQ. It gives a lot of good
information on raytracing, including POV-Ray. It is posted to
the newsgroup regularly, and is also at:
http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/bngusenet/top.html

Another is the IRTC (Internet RayTracing Competition), where you
can find the source for many interesting pictures (many of
which have since been incorporated into include files). The
new main site is at http://www.irtc.org

Please e-mail me### [at] shawnfumo@the-spa.com with any comments you
may have on the listing. Corrections, suggestions, etc. are
always welcome.

Note: Entries are in alphabetical order.

1 -- What's New
#############################################################

Well, there isn't as much new as there has been in past releases,
but there is still some new things. I decided to put ()s around
the update markings: (*), (%), and (#). This is so they stand
out better, and if you search for them, you won't get the
characters that make up the dividers.

I've been a bit distracted with the end of school, so if you told
me about a site, and it isn't on here, please tell me again.

If you notice, there's a bit of an infusion of molecular entries.
I got most of those off of the official pov-ray site, which now
put back some utility links.

-------------------------------------------------------------
(*) A new entry or catagory.
(%) Changed entry or catagory.
(#) Something new that I'm not done with or sure of.
-------------------------------------------------------------

  2.1.1 -- Graphical General Modellers
    (%)Moray - New web address.
    (%)Mondfarilo - New pre-beta version (May 16, 1997).
(%)Mid Night Modeller - The entry was formally split into 2
sections, since there was an older freeware version (2.10),
and a newer shareware version (3.0 alpha 15), both for MSDOS.
However, the author had trouble with the video drivers for
3.0, and decided to skip it, and go straight to ver. 4.0
which will be for Win32, removing 3.0 from the site (even
though he says he'll put it back if people really want him
to). So, I've taken off the 3.0 entry, and added an entry
for 4.0 to "What People are working on."
(*)Polywog - This is somewhat specialized, but I think it can
       go here.

  2.2.1 Texture Editors
    (*)Rodin97
    (#)Colormixer - Can't connect to page.
    (*)Time Colors
    (*)PCCS Color Include File

  2.2.3 Surfaces(Triangles/Bezier Patches/NURBS/Splines)
(#)CosmaShiva - Added but should I keep it? (no POV support)

  2.2.4 Landscapes/Height Flields
(#)Vue d'Esprit - Added but should I keep it? (no POV support)
    (*)Wilbur
    (*)TerrainMan

  3.3 Legos
(*)L3G0studio - A beta of this has been released, so it has been
moved from "What people are working on" to here.

  3.5 Molecular
    (*)VMD
    (*)MolPOV
    (*)SWISS-PdbViewer
    (*)Re_View
    (*)pdb2pov
    (*)CPK

  (*)3.8 Starfields
     (*)3DStars.inc
     (*)Universe
     (*)POVRay Star Field Generator
     (*)Nebula.inc

  3.10 Misc. Object Generators

  6 Converters
(%)POVray.m - Got the locations listed right.
    (*)MacDEM2POV

Description: Include file that lets you use the Practical
  Color Co-ordinate System (PCCS).
By Author: "Using this include file, you can specify

----POVRay Texture Tiler----
Author: Chris Colefax -- cco### [at] geocitiescom
Version: Not listed

Descripton: By Author "This little include file will take any POVRay
pigment and create a seamlessly tileable image suitable for use as
  web-page backgrounds, texture maps, etc."
Notes: Because of the way it uses blending, textures will look a
little bit different than they would otherwise. If you
experiment, should be able to come up with good textures.

----POVRay Three Colour Triangles----

Version: Not listed
File Type: Include File
WWW: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/1434/otherincludes.html
Description: By Author "This include file will allow you to colour
triangles and smooth triangles by specifying the RGB colour value

Description: From Author "It supports all main texture and colour
features of povray 2.2 except: image_map (it is more modeller's
task I assume), material_map (if you are able to use it, you
don't need any interactive program anyway :-) and some multi
coloured pigment like checkers and hexagon. Simple new features
of povray 3.0 like new pigment crackle or wrinkles are supported
too. No texture_map yet, but layered textures are there."

----POV-View----

Tryout Type: Shareware (with nag screens)
Cost: $25
FTP: ftp.povray.org/povray/utilities/general/clays.zip
Notes: The file clays.zip seems to be corrupted in some way.

Description: "The World's First Punk Rock 3D Modeller"
This is a NURBS modeller in its very early stages.
  Has OpenGL preview, too.
Notes: I don't know if I should list this? I'd ask the
guy to support POV-Ray, but POV can't do NURBS.
(HINT HINT -- NURBS patch for POV-Ray would be a
  good project for someone!).

Platform: Windows?
Tryout Type: Freeware
Export: DXF/POV/RAW/CSV
WWW: http://mcn.simplenet.com/3d/3d.html
Notes: It doesn't exactly export to POV yet. A smooth_triangle
export is in the works. However, in the meantime, it does make
a .pov file for use with the .inc file, made by converting from
RAW to POV (using 3dto3d or raw2pov).
Description: This a program for modelling various equations. It
comes with some predifined, and you can make ones of your own.
You can then specify things like Amplitude, xy plane, and how
smoth you want the object. Also has a wireframe preview. If you
send him equations, he'll add them to the predifined ones. An
  example of an equation might be: 8*(Sin[x]/x)*(Sin[y]/y) {8,8}

Export: IGES+OBJ(WaveFront)--DXF--3DS--LWO--RAW--STL--AG
WWW: http://www.rhino3d.com/
Notes: The next version (in around 30 days) will be able to export
to both POV-Ray (as smoothed triangles), and to Moray (as UDO and
  INC files).
Description: By Author "Rhino uses trimmed freeform NURBS surfaces
to accurately represent curved shapes, including curved shapes with
holes in them. Solids can be created by joining together surfaces
at their edges. Rhino solids can be exploded into surfaces, edited,
and then joined back together again. Rhino supports partial solids
and integrates solids and surface modeling. Rhino has the powerful
ability to trim any combination of curves, surfaces, or solids."
