I clipped two tori using boxes instead of planes, and that alone decreased
render times by 12 to 15% (speed increase of 13 to 18%)!
I also messed around with various ways of slicing up the base of the object, but
the results ranged from marginal improvement to drastic slowdown, so I left that
alone.
