Does anyone have a simple scene file on making a cross or a cricifix? I am
new to povray and I would like to try and make my first scene using a
cross.

Thank you in advance to whomever can help me.

Pauly

Use an union of 3 boxes. One big box for the vertical part and 2 for the arms placed
on the sides of
the main one. Use a wood texture with "rotate 90*x" for the first box and "rotate
90*y" for the
other two. You can find many wooden textures in the file "woods.inc", try various ones
until you get
a result that please you. If the scale don't suits you, use a scale on the textures to
enlarge or
shrink the grain.

I think the reason is to give the overlap in the center a more realistic
look..

i.e. it would be constructed like this:
      +---+
      |vvv|
+----|vvv|----+
|>>>>|vvv|>>>>|
+----|vvv|----+
      |vvv|
      |vvv|
      |vvv|
      |vvv|
      +---+

(Excuse the bad ASCII art)

Where the >> and VV symbols show the direction of the wood grain. If you
overlap the pieces, the two patterns would overlap causing visible
speckling artifacts. If you want it as just a single piece of wood, then
you can get away with just creating a union of two boxes. (or merge, if
you intend it to be a transparent material...)

If the height of the two pieces is the same, which is the
most logical thing to do, you will have a coinciding surfaces
problem. With textures that is sure to look ugly.
Solution: simply offset one a tiny amount.
