This renders a checkerboard with a shadow falling across it which has a
light gray checker in the middle that matches the same gray shade as a
darker checker in the light. To prove that, you'll probably need to select
one of the checkers in a image editor, copy then paste it back next to the
other.

Rather hastily made scene file, maybe some room for improvement.

Damn, thats clever - much better than most other optical illusions. Makes me
think there's a lot to be found in photorealistic or near-photorealistic
illusions that hasn't really been explored in the usual diagrammatic ones.
